@Adam @drahardja They shipped a bunch of plastic phones and the one ad they showed most often kept featuring a kickstand, made of plastic. The Metro UI was really good, but they decided to create multiple cheap devices nobody wanted instead of 1 really good device. It is too bad. Having a 3rd option would be good for everyone.

@Adam To be fair he was saddled with Windows Phone when made CEO, he had to make choices based on sales and competition, and being ubiquitous in a mobile-first world doesn’t mean you need to make your own phone. In fact that quote from 2015 occurred as he was actually discussing the success of Windows 10https://www.mobileworldlive.com/featured-content/home-banner/microsofts-nadella-reaffirms-mobile-first-vision/

@Adam @drahardja When these new phones came out I even went to a Hackathon for Windows Phone. The .NET runtime was so gutted that you could not use many APIs so your code could not be easily used on this hardware. Back then LINQ was such a powerful new SDK. The most essential parts were cut out on the phone. 🫤

@brennansv Oh wow! That's interesting. Maybe they were thinking security? Or fast turn-around since Windows Phone 7 was such a quick re-do from Windows Mobile?

@shepgo Yeah, I kind of remember that. Today he's regretting giving up on Windows Phone I hear: https://www.pcmag.com/news/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadellas-biggest-regret-is-ditching-windows-phone

@Adam That’s interesting. Partly for its revisionist history. He was chosen from a slate of candidates specifically because he promised to focus on cloud-based interoperability, and a promise to make a quick and hard decision about Windows Phone, which was a continuing, costly (and growing) flop. Saying “I think there could have been ways we could have made it work by perhaps reinventing the category of computing between PCs, tablets, and phones” sounds ridiculously pie-in-the-sky.

@brennansv @Adam I liked Metro UI, except for the twitching Live Tiles that constantly triggered my ADHD. If I could calm that down, the rest of the UI was actually pretty nice.

@drahardja I really liked it too. So much more unique than the grid of icons everyone else has, but also still usable with language & visual cues.

@chrisisgr8 Yeah, but the Apple and Google mobile OS duopoly is kind of terrible too.

@Adam Mobile is failing because the audience has selected for itself: people who do nothing important with their time. The desktop audience is more affluent, educated, and capable, therefore are better consumers. If the free money from government went away, Apple and Nike would be much smaller companies.

@Adam when Nadella was recently “interviewed” about Windows Phone, he waxed nostalgic about possibly making more money had Microsoft stuck with it. * I would have asked if that idea has ANY chance to exceed the money his company makes (through royalties) each time Google’s mobile OS ships on another Android phone 🙄
