We had such a blast talking about frightful words from Jess' new book, "Words from Hell"!What's the difference between terror and horror? Why was the word for "bear" so scary that it's lost to history?Check out this week's Grammar Girl podcast and get ready for Halloween!PODLINK: https://pod.link/173429229TRANSCRIPT: https://grammar-girl.simplecast.com/episodes/jess-zafarris/transcriptYOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/OflYoecxpVU#GrammarGirl #podcast #Halloween #Etymology #WordNerd

@grammargirl I'm intrigued by the topics, but unfortunately I can't get to the transcript. There isn't one on the page you link to above. The page contains a link to the transcript, but on Firefox it brings me back to the same page, and on Safari it takes me to a blank page.

@bodhipaksa Ugh. That would be because I forgot to actually upload it. (It has been oNe Of tHoSe weEks.)Thanks for letting me know. It's fixed.I also had to laugh when I looked at it again and saw the disclaimer at the top about it being a "computer-generated and lightly edited transcript." That actually means we carefully reviewed it twice but are still terrified we missed some errors.

@grammargirl Well, thank you! I have the same misgivings about editing automated transcripts or myself!

@grammargirl BTW, recently I published an article based on transcript of a reflective meditation I'd led on the topic of accepting aging. for some reason, the AI had inserted text during some of the long silences. At one point it inserted, "Yeah, I'm not doing that," as if it was rebelling against the reflections I was offering. Another time it inserted "[applause]" which seemed almost sarcastic. Weird!

@bodhipaksa That may be the weirdest thing I've heard yet! Are you using a service designed for transcription like Descript or Macwhisper? My problem has been AI deleting whole paragraphs when I use it for a second clean-up step, so now I'm using "compare documents" to quickly find any problems.

@grammargirl This was MacWhisper. I wrote to the developer to let him know that the AI was hallucinating—perhaps commenting sarcastically is more accurate—but he didn't reply. The transcript was fascinating, thanks! I love knowing that we don't know what bears were originally called.BTW, the reason Shelley and her friends wrote their stories was that the weather was so bad they couldn't go out and they were going stir crazy. And that was because of the eruption of Mt Tambora in Indonesia.

@bodhipaksa , Oh, that's so cool! I knew they were stuck in stormy weather, but I didn't know it was because of volcano erupted. And weird about MacWhisper. We haven't had any problems with that so far, that I know of. We usually load the transcripts we make with Macwhisper up to YouTube as subtitles, and I think the auto-sync would fail if they were that far off. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on them though!

@grammargirl If I remember there's a BBC "In Our Time" podcast on the topic of the Mount Tambora eruption. This event gave rise to the "Year Without a Summer" with widespread climate disruption. In New England there were frosts in late June that killed off most of the crops. It's a great episode, and a reminder of how interwoven things are, that we may not have had the novel Frankenstein if it wasn't for events on the other side of the globe.

@Eastcheap @bodhipaksa Thank you! Now that you you mention it, I remember hearing reference to the year "eighteen hundred and froze to death," which that Wikipedia links tells me is from a song. But I had no idea it had ties to "Frankenstein."

@grammargirl Nice episode. Interestingly, Halloween itself seems to be a collision between pagan and Christian traditions. While it's widely thought to be a pagan frestival, the name derives from All Hallow Even, the night before All Saints Day which has been November 1st since Pope Gregory III in the 700s AD. Coincidentally, it may also have been a pagan new years celebration https://www.britannica.com/topic/All-Saints-Day

@grammargirl such a fun podcast & extended on into your youtube video! 👍😁 I thought it interesting that the TV show “His Dark Materials" makes use of demons as helpful spirit animals for children. Also fun to see the TV show “Wednesday" missed an opportunity to call their character a wifwolf although I would spell it wyfwolf - probably would have confused more than it entertained
