You know, I've been trying to figure out for a while why I prefer playing games on my switch more than my desktop PC. And I think I figured it out, it's because I'm able to just... stop playing whenever I want, and then continue exactly where I left off, even when the battery dies (Yes, I go that long sometimes between play sessions).I can't really do that on a PC, the closest is stopping a process (Effectively freezing it CPU wise), but if I have to restart my PC or god forbid, it crashes. I lose the progress I had. The only safe way to stop playing a game on PC, is to:PauseSave the gameExit the gameExit steam because it's resource hog in the background (If it's a steam game, I try to get games only on GOG)And then to continue:Start steam (Steam starts slowly)Launch game (This can take a while depending on the game)_Load save file (Again, can take a while)And in most cases, you won't be exactly where you left off, but usually at a checkpoint. On the switch, it's:Press power button. And then when I want to continue:Press power button. Not to mention the convenience of being able to drag it around with me anywhere and play comfortably, which I can't do, even with a laptop. The tl;dr: I guess my brain likes to just stop doing what I'm doing anytime it wants without consequence lol#Gaming #PCGaming #Nintendo #Switch

@charadon tip, the power button on the switch just makes it go to sleep. Set your pc to do the same for a more equal comparison.Or long press the switch power button to properly turn it off.

@lil5@fosstodon.org Issue on PC, is that it has more uses than just gaming. So if I want to do programming for a while, since i'm using the same machine, the best I can do is alt-tab and stop the process. If we could just save-state a game, that'd be sick. But that would be insanely platform dependent lol

@charadon @lil5 If performance and storage is not a concern then playing games in dedicated VMs might work? Could even have multiple active save states in parallel. For me the reason why I prefer my Switch is much simpler btw. I already sit in front of a computer all day for work so I don’t want to do that in my free time too. But putting the Switch on standby is still really nice.

@setsubyou@mastodon.social @lil5@fosstodon.org The issue with a dedicated VM is that you'll need to pass a GPU passthrough if you want even remotely good performance. Realistically, containers would be the way to do it, but you'll run into the issue that without specially built kernels, it's hard to save and restore a container.

@charadon 100% agree. I got back into gaming as a busy adult with the 3DS for the same reason: I could just flip it open any time for as long or as little time as I had available and the flip it shut knowing I could continue seamlessly later. The Switch is not quite as pocketable but it has a lot of that same pick-up-and-play energy.
