T420 here as well, upgraded to have two SSDs and 16G of RAM. It's a lovely machine. That said, I recently got a T480 that has yet to arrive. Evidently it's the last of then ThinkPads with readily replaceable parts.

@cliveRemember in the '90s and early 2000s when everyone kind of had a "Computer person"? And both AMD and Intel were vociferously competing for that computer person because they knew that it would subsequently sell computers to regular people.I feel like all of those "computer people" I know are now pointing at the Framework and going "use this". And I hope, for everyone, that it happens, because we need these standards.

@gatesvp Yeah, good parallelAnd I hope it happens too -- god, if we could get standardized guts for laptops, the amount of ewaste would plummet and the value achievable in a laptop would skyrocket

@clive Framework’s frivolous upgrade ability might turn less cost-effective and certainly generate equal or more e-waste. I still use a MacBook Air from 2012 and a MacBook Pro from 2016. Not confident the Lego-style Framework platform will age that well.

@clive @dangillmor T420, I suppose even more robust than my T430s! It’s not my daily, it’s experimental to explore Linux mostly. Keyboard is very nice. And I like eg how easy it is to change SSD on it.

@clive @dangillmor The funny thing is I recently got a T25 (T470 but with the classic 7 row ThinkPad keyboard) and I love it for basic work, but the GPUs are really showing their age and the dual core CPU isn't helping! For people who don't do heavy things, it's no big deal and typing is a joy, but yeah, for somebody who sometimes games or does GPU heavy work like me, it's not ideal.(The guy who sold it to me, he had a very rare 1 in 100 rare trackpoint memento. I now am the owner of it.)

@clive ThinkPads have been my choice pretty much since they came out, with the exception of a period when I was using Apple laptops, until that company's control-freakery moved me to Linux (about 2008). Lots of Linux people use ThinkPads so, as you know, they're well supported.

@clive@dangillmor My employer let us keep our Thinkpads when we got new ones, so I have 3 spaced out plus my personal Thinkpad that I bought that has a good graphics card (I can't remember all the models). I still use the old ones for loaners and miscellaneous stuff. I'll probably never buy another laptop.

As with Clive, I've not heard of the Reform. I''m reading about it now. That said, I'd counsel thinking hard about the carbon footprint cost of even an ethical new laptop versus buying a used one, where the carbon footprint will be comparitive power usage and comparitive shipping. That said, nothing's ever simple - if we want companies to build more ethically and sustainably, they need to sell something to continue as viable businesses.

@resuna @dangillmor Nice!I'm writing a blog post now in praise of my old T420My six-year-old Macbook Pro just died (battery-monitoring chip fried, and it's part of the motherboard, so it'd need an entire new motherboard, and parts + labor is making it such a mess that I will probably just get a new Macbook pro and try to coax 6-7 years out of that one) ...... and in the interim I've been using the thinkpad full-timeIt's so damn good
