Been thinking lately that maybe the best thing for open source game development is not a new game engine but some kind of asset management tool. Do one job, do it well.I'm thinking of something like how JavaScript transpiler tools work, but instead of ingesting one syntax of code and outputting another, it'll take many types of files and output formats optimized for games and GPU use.Building this as a standalone tool would aid in it's ability to be integrated into other workflows.

A lot of game development is just managing assets. And the options are bewildering. PNG images are easy to author, tons of tools exist for it, but it's better to have an image in a compressed format that the GPU can understand, like ASTC, for which exactly 0 image editing tools offer it as an output format.

In the spirit of open source software almost always doing everything it can to undermine itself, this project should be named "AssMan".
