U.S. scientist Robert Sapolsky says humans have no free will. That's what I think, and all the pretense that we're intelligent and machines aren't is ridiculous given the experiences we're having communicating with machines.https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2023-10-17/stanford-scientist-robert-sapolskys-decades-of-study-led-him-to-conclude-we-dont-have-free-will-determined-book

@dave @davew yeah…no, read that, still think it’s silly. Then there is thishttps://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acscentsci.2c01114Which also has a strong, though chaotic, silliness factor

@dave He had an epiphany as a youth that there is no god and we have no free will and we’re on our own… and then he has spent his life trying to prove it? Sounds like motivated reasoning to me. I’m sorry, but I absolutely reject the idea that we are machines. We have powers of introspection, external considering, selflessness, and more. We can break habits and cycles and rise above our trauma. Things machines have no ability to do. I’m sure he has many valuable insights, but the premise is bunk.
