So, in the end, we discovered the people that are the most vocally against #TheBadSpace either 1. have a significant problem with boundaries and/or 2. don't actually know how the project works.There are plenty of valid criticisms for the project, which I have discussed at length on and off the fedi. But generally speaking, the most critical voices of the project don't know what they are talking about. Which is why they never approach me in good faith to ask.

Regardless of whether or not people want to use #TheBadSpace, the hate campaign instigated by techDOTlgbt revealed profound disrespect for me and the idea of safety for Black and Brown folks.We can have intense conversations and be civil. We can have a hard convo and avoid flat-out hostility and harassment.I do not reject criticism for the project. I want people to be critical of it.But many 'critics' felt justified in lobbing the most hateful and absurd commentary based on what they thought the project was and not what it actually is and then refusing even to acknowledge the truth and that they were wrong.This base lack of civility is rooted in anti-Blackness. The absolute refusal to acknowledge reality regarding Black folks' lived experience has a long history. The falsehoods that still float around the fedi about the project directly connects to behaviors prompted by a fundamental dislike of Black and Brown people. And I refuse to engage any perspective based on a raw bias of a part of my identity.

I think all the fury came from me, a Black person, refusing to deem hateful and rage-filled comments from primarily white people who I've never heard of before as something worthy of discussion. In the weeks-long hate campaign, there was this idea I was a bad person because I didn't bend over backward to address lies from every bigot that stomped into my mentions.There was this rage that I wouldn't accept people's entitlement and assumptions as 'critique' and looked at it as what it was: racists looking for any opportunity to shout hate at marginalized communities.The violence enacted against me was to punish me for having the audacity not to center whiteness as the priority for the project. This thought enraged not only overt racists but white liberals and progressives as well, which I think surprised a lot of people in the fedi.

The truth is that I didn't do anything to the people who launched a hate campaign against me. No one can point to anything substantiating the idea that #TheBadSpace harms any community. The reality is that the lies that persist about the project will continue to connect with people who profoundly dislike Black and Brown people and the idea of us having space that does not allow unfettered access.There is absolute rage in the fedi around us being here in ways that do not make white-identified people feel their needs are always part of our decision-making process.Which, ironically, illustrates why TBS is so needed.

The racist backlash #TheBadSpace received has validated it as a tool trying to solve a complicated but necessary problem in the fedi and the open web in general that many people fear will remove an unearned entitlement.But if you are Black and Brown in this space, advocating for a completely open web with no moderation or blocklists is a big red flag. The assumption that people operate in good faith is dangerous to everyone, not white. And after the events of the last month, those who are not bigots see the pragmatic value of tools that do not assume good faith. Because the reality is that everyone on the web is not a good person. So, the work continues.
