The tire pressure light on our Toyota started coming on every time we drive. Each time I'd manually check the tires, and they'd all be identically and fully inflated. Got it into the shop today, and turns out they have battery powered sensors inside the tire, and one's battery had died (while the other 3 are on the verge). Cost to fix: about $500 including parts and labor.Mechanic: Is the light driving you nuts?Me: Y'all got some duck tape?Mechanic: *tears off a piece and hands it to me*

@cinja The quoted $320 for the sensors. That's more than I’m seeing on AutoZone but not freakishly. Go figure, we have the expensive model. The labor was $160 for removal, replacement, rebalancing, and remounting all 4 tires which doesn’t seem out of line locally.I'll revisit the decision next time we replace the tires and have them all off anyway.

@bitprophet @tek worst part of this is its just a CR2023 or similar battery in the sensor, but its sealed in with silicone and Toyota encourage installation of whole new ones (which also require coding as the ID number that gets transmitted on 433,92 MHz will have changed).Apparently its possible to replace the battery, but still quite a bit of work (I'm glad my car just uses the ABS sensor data for tyre pressure monitoring!)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtZWndK1gE8

@vfrmedia @bitprophet So annoying. The mechanic was very Hank Hill with me. "Hey, you and me been driving a while. What’d we do before we had these sensors?” "We used that tire gauge I have in my glove box.” “Did you really need that light?" “Nope.”

@tek @bitprophet The cordless inflators I use have pressure gauge, but I also bought an old style one with a dial as well (which suggests that the electronic gauge on one of the cordless inflators is 0,1 bar too low compared to the actual pressure, I trust the old style one more)

@tek the worst part is, I used to own a 2000 Olds, and currently own a low-end busted-ass 2012 Nissan, which sense tire pressure by monitoring wheel rotation dynamics and thus don't require any batteries. works fine.

@deutrino Our last Toyota did, too. That seemed like a pretty good setup.

@vfrmedia @bitprophet Mine’s digital, but I’ve tested it enough to feel confident. The one on our inflator is like yours: it's kind of in the ballpark, but that's as close as it gets.

@tek @bitprophet I ended up with two cordless inflators as the first one stopped working (but started again after the battery had been discharged and recharged) so keep the newer one in the car and the older one on my desk at work (where there are often fleet cars that require their tyres pumped up) - the analogue gauge reads identical to the older inflator but slightly more than the newer one (I'd rather have slightly too much air than not enough!)

@wolfteeth Sigh, same. Now it's back to having a repeating chore on my calendar, and an extra check before road trips. You know, like we all did 10 years ago. 😀
