       @grammargirl Maybe it's because I'm a Brit, but I find commentate fine, even though I also find it a bit ugly. To say someone "commented" on a match is too general., and "provided commentary" is clumsy.I comment on sports, but I don't commentate on them because I'm not a commentator. We do need a word to describe them and what they do.

       @grammargirlI remember an old cartoon/comic strip from the '90s where a princess spud was prevented from marrying Des Lynam because he was a "common-'tater" (commentator). That's stuck with me for nearly 30 years as being inextricably linked with the word...
