@nugger I’ve been saying for a while that the reason they want the Spear™® is that it’s simply NOT an AR15. It’s simply too silly and wasteful to be a logic-based decision, they had to have approved it out of a sense of paranoia, hate, or fear. Sure, they had their tales that they wanted to be able to take on a fully-armored chinaman/russkie w/ the codpiece plate at 600 yards, but they could have just bought a mountain of .308s to burn through all that ammunition they already own. I think it’s part graft, part jewed, part politics, part planning. They’re looking far forward, when they can cut off the domestic support structure of the AR platform in the long run, stop handing out cheap ammo and standardized, non-trademarked parts and designs at a price normies can afford. When you tally up all the little cultural aspects I can see how the ultimate idea ended up getting approved as it meandered through the system. Everyone’s getting a little something they wanted for a while. Plus they’ve had these gay carbine replacement competitions since I was a kid, and the Spear is at least less gay than buying a bunch of dumb HK 416’s with that heinous quad rail like they always gravitate towards.

That's the catch... it's useless because you have crew served weapons, DMRs/Snipers, or call for fire for stuff outside that range like you said.All they had to do was issue an upper with better barrels, free float rails, ACOG+RMR combos, and put decent triggers & ambidextrous controls in the lowers along with issuing Mk262 ammo. Now you have a ~600 yd rifle for around $1,000 and don't have to change out all of the logistical stuff that is already in place.A lot cheaper than buying a new rifle and ammunition switchover.

A rifle that will do 2moa out to ~600 yards would be plenty good enough and easy and cheap to do by just swapping out uppers ($800-$1,000) and adding ~$200 worth of parts to the lowers already in service.That's less than half the price of the Sig kike trash and no major logistical changes.But then that doesn't make the kike Ron Cohen at SIG billions of dollar so we're NOT going to do that, obviously.

Every product they have is 5 to 15 years behind the curve, they simply don’t have the same need to keep up like the industry here does. Euros, krauts, and their ilk are benchrest shooters, so all their civilian spec stuff is geared towards a single stack, 10-rd POS with heavy ass quad rails and dopey ergonomics. (they just love those dumb 11-oz rubber pads on everything) It took them what, like, a full 6 years to switch from their faggy bespoke HK-keymod to normal, lightweight Mlok? And they refused to widen their magwell to standard AR spec for more than a decade so you’d buy their $50 steel mags? (Thank the USMC for ending that, I assume)Don’t even get me started on retardo boomers bragging about paying $500 for “genuine HK416 forgings” so they can build the ultimate bin laden rifle. The whole thing is just another boomer bubble, HK is resting on its laurels from the old days.

I think they even take a mild loss on the M17 in the original deal, knowing perfectly they’ll make that money back in spades from the collector cachet. That’s just the water cooler talk tho, and I don’t remember much aside from the usual shenanigans you see in sales

HK could do better for sure on many things and they're heavy but they run well and aren't kiked like SIG.Don't recall them having nearly as many issues with safety/malfunctions like the recent SIG trash either.If they would make a few changes and do better with civilian sales they'd be on top of the world.

The heat dissipation stuff works both ways though...The more material there is the longer it takes to heat up but retains heat more. The super thin rails get hot A LOT quicker but cool off quicker.There are upsides to both but you should be wearing gloves anyways and as someone who used to get paid to carry them around, I prefer lighter stuff since you're going to be spending way more time carrying them than "using" them.

Very true. The Glock isn't perfect despite their motto but it is "good enough for most" and can be easily upgraded to suit your needs.After they added ambi controls and optic mounts there isn't a whole lot left to do to it.I really think every single tactical style firearm should me made with a threaded barrel though now that suppressors have caught on. Ounces add up to pounds pretty quick.I don't add anything unless it has functional value but I'll sacrifice a little weight for durability.If you build another you might consider a 13.5" rail to save a little weight since it should be long enough still to stretch your hand out some and get a good grip.
