Today, something odd happened to me, slightly concerning but which, fortunately, ended on a positive note and with deep reflection. They're doing some renovations in my office, so I sat down at a cafΓ© table to work. I had with me an old HP laptop running FreeBSD. Ferrara is generally a peaceful city, but lately, some groups of youngsters have been causing trouble, going around bothering people, and in extreme cases, starting fights.Today, it was my turn. As they roamed around trying to provoke others, two of them approached me and began touching my laptop. They mocked me, jesting (not so playfully) about how ancient my computer was and how "they needed a computer," picking it up and examining it. Politely, I told them I needed it for work and it had all my files, so I couldn't just hand it over. It was broad daylight, but no one else was around at that moment. One of them noticed something unusual - "Where's the Windows menu? Is this Linux?""No, it's FreeBSD. Have you ever heard of it?" Their surprised expressions said it all. The entire group gathered, sat on the ground, and listened intently for about 15 minutes. I stalled, hoping for other people to arrive, so I wasn't alone.Eventually, they got up, told me I was "old" but cool, and that they would immediately try out the BSDs (they were particularly intrigued by OpenBSD's security features - which they didn't grasp fully but saw as "professional hacker stuff"). They gave me a high-five, peacefully, without bothering anyone further. Now, I'm left wondering: did they leave me alone because they learned something intriguing from me, because other people arrived, or are they just bored teenagers causing issues to pass the time - and got engrossed in something new, hence shifting their focus temporarily? All I know is I was relieved to get back to my office and from there, hear the rain outside, which usually deters these boys from troubling others. I can say that today, FreeBSD saved me from very different problems than it usually does πŸ˜ƒ #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #LifeLessons #UnexpectedTurns #RunBSD

@stefano When I was (more) young and foolish, the folks who ran BSD & esoteric Linux were the True Hackers, thus more badass and counter-culture than myself. Just like they might hassle the dentist on the Goldwing motorcycle, but the one-percenter on a deeply chopped and bobbed custom is just going to get respect. And part of that is perceived threat of retaliation.

@stefano all at once, I think. The "old but cool" is a good indicator. You had some time for them, you were honest and took them seriously, you made them curious and shared interesting things with no strings attached for them (like in school). You were doing/using your thing, trying out other things because most grown ups don't. L33t h4x0r stuff is also cool.I think your way of interacting was making an impression on them. Seems, they don't get that often.

@stefano I could've sworn there used to be an amusing anecdote or satire or something about "Unix hooligans" roaming the city rioting (a takeoff on "football/soccer hooligans")...but I can no longer find it online.(Come to think of it, no doubt it was just part of a print magazine column, probably Unix Review, by the late great British expat tech writer/humorist Stan Kelly-Bootle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Kelly-Bootle )Anyway good for you. You escaped death while potentially converting an entire crowd to the side of goodness and light. ;)

@stefano @Tionisla Thanks for documenting & sharing this!I agree it's a bit of an "all of the above" result from staying level-headed and strategizing with what you had available. They were looking for an emotional rise from you as an excuse to escalate, but you sidestepped and engaged their intellects while treating them as equals. That all goes a long way!Of course, the older I get, the more I realize that when I was younger, I couldn't read what I wanted or needed.

@morgant @Tionisla Exactly, the goal was to provoke some reaction from me as an excuse to start an escalation of aggression. I understood it and tried to remain calm. I wouldn't have imagined that I'd pique their interest like that, but the result was good. Who knows, maybe at least one of them will be inspired and get involved in open-source software and find their own personal fulfillment in it

@stefano @morgant @Tionisla glad its ended well, but it seems mildly unnerving these lads knew what Linux was in the first place *and* sat and listened to you for 15 minutes, but I'm British and there's normally an anti-intellectual culture amongst similar youths here (you'd probably still be able to defuse the situation, but they'd walk away when they realised the computer wasn't worth nicking).Maybe Italy is culturally different and even "street hooligans" have tech skills/interests?

@vfrmedia @morgant @Tionisla I spent a few years in the UK, and I can confirm there's a certain cultural difference. As you've rightly pointed out, in the UK, these lads often reject any form of knowledge, resorting to violence and responding aggressively to any engagement. In Italy, at least for now, they seem more like groups of teenagers wanting to rebel, but underneath, they also have a good education. It's more of a protest than ignorance.

@stefano @vfrmedia @morgant it also depends on home environment and experiences. If you grow up in a social insecure/violent/patronizing surrounding you just extrapolate the pattern to other situation, or switch the roles to cope with it. Who knows, we would have to ask them...Also I think Montessori/Reggio had perhaps some influence on the educational system in Italy, so things might be less rigid than e.g. our north of the alps. ;-)

@Tionisla @vfrmedia @morgant In kindergarten, I attended a school using the Montessori method. I remember a peaceful environment where I learned to read and write at a very young age. This approach has stayed with me in life, where learning new things is enjoyable and fulfilling. I wonder if it's just my way of being or if this educational approach somehow nurtured this behavior.

@stefano Had a similar. albeit way less threatening experience about ten years ago. When I used to commute, sometimes I used my laptop for making electronic music: ambient, sound sculpting or weird electronica. One day, a bunch of kids entered the wagon, eager to disturb some folks. They began looking at my laptop and asked me what was I doing with my laptop. me: "Making music". And promptly introduced them to Cockos Reaper, quite a powerful DAW 1/

@stefano They teased me, telling me that I was "too old" for this sort of stuff, but then they stared at my laptop, now an impromptu magical musical instrument in an hypnotic state while I showed them what they COULD do. When I arrived at my destination, I gave them the link to Reaper. Some days later, I met one of them in train and he told me that he downloaded the DAW and started playing with it.

@stefano Just imagine if in addition to telling that group of young people about the security features of OpenBSD, you had added that, for example, FreeBSD (because it is performance-oriented) has the great feature of self-optimizing.In my opinion, it would be great if a similar application existed in the *BSD world, I mean the new software technology "bpftune" (https://github.com/oracle/bpftune). This new technology will be the next level to obtain an even more efficient system for all types of users with minimal effort; *BSD should not be left behind, I think it is necessary to port it and even improve it, it is not only necessary to optimize network access but also access to the file system, self-optimization is here to stay. It would be great to see the idea promoted. Have a nice day!

@stefano I think one of the reasons why teenagers end up on the street is because they have no idea on what they should do with their life and free time, and nobody cares about what they do. You thought them instead of sending them away, and I think that can make a big difference. If you are then again and have the time, ask if somebody would be interested to meet regularly and learn more about Linux or BSD. Might even get some of the kids away from the street.

@bzed this could be a great idea. If there's interest, I could talk to the local council and try to organize something more regular. If this could help people to improve their lives and introduce them to IT, I'd surely be more than glad to help.

@geobarrod porting this to FreeBSD could be quite difficult, but I'm boosting it and, who knows, maybe someone could be implementing it. I'm not too much into kernel internals, so I couldn't do it but the Fediverse is full of great coders!

@nCrazed Ferrara Is full of (free) activities for young people. But maybe they don't want "traditional" activities and they prefer something more "appealing". They saw all the BSDs as hackers' OSes (and they were amazed to know that FreeBSD makes their PlayStations run). Maybe they just don't know what they like or want to do and nobody wants to spend enough time with them to help them to find their ways in this world

@stefano I got a "wow this is amazing" story kind of like yours, but more of a positive note.I was 15-17 (I started programming at a bit of a young age, 12 or something) or something at the airport travelling with family, someone watched me program OpenCL stuff on my old Mac. This was OpenCL 1.x, so it used a weird C syntax. She was fascinated about it. This was before the AI boom and I knew that machine learning had a lot of potential, I was just playing with ideas though. I still know the basics of GPGPU programming today.#OpenCL #programming If you're wondering, I run FreeBSD on my NAS, and it's fun.
