THE GRAMMAR DAILY is an update to THE GRAMMAR DEVOTIONAL, which came out in 2009. Part of the work was updating cultural references, and a funny thing was that in 2009, I used "Bennifer" as an example of a portmanteau for the hot couple at the time: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Well, after years apart, they're now back together and a hot couple again. I could have left them in!#Bookstadon #TheGrammarDaily #WritingTips https://read.macmillan.com/lp/the-grammar-daily-qdt/

But authors, here's one thing I learned: If you want your book to have staying power, limit your cultural references. I was cringing as I was editing sections with TiVo and MySpace.Other portmanteau examples now include "mimsy" and "slithy" (from "Alice Through the Looking Glass"), "brunch," "spork," and "frenemy."And remember, THE GRAMMAR DAILY comes out November 14. It makes a great gift, and when you preorder a book, an angel gets a puppy.#AmWriting #AmEditing

@mimsical Yes! Sources say "mimsy" is a blend of "miserable" and "flimsy."

@grammargirl I can't tell you how many times I've been editing out the word "Twitter" in recent months. Just say "social media" folks.

@grammargirl Beware technological references as well. In a meditation book I gave links to RealPlayer files, which back at the turn of the century was *the* way people listened to streaming audio. Hardly anyone remembers it now. The MP3 has had more staying power, but I suspect one day I'll hear the words, "What's an MP3, grandad?"

@grammargirl Could we say that the word "portmanteau" is itself a portmanteau word because it combines "porte" and "manteau"?

@bishop6 Yes! In mention that in the book; there just wasn't room to include it on the graphic.

@grammargirl Two things from my books that I still regret writing? That you shouldn't buy a laptop that weighs more than 20 pounds (this was 1990) and that Network Solutions was a good company to register a domain name with (maybe 1995?). I'm sure there's TONS more. 🤣🤣🤣

@mlanger 🤣 I revised another book this year, and I had to take out almost the entire section on the internet and writing online. It was painfully quaint.
