Wonder what Zelensky is teasing here. 🤔“In an unusually early statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Ukrainian forces for the successful attack and nodded to “effective” Western weapons. “I thank some of our partners. That is indeed an effective weapon, as we agreed,” Zelenskyy said, revealing no more details.”https://www.politico.eu/article/kyiv-ukraine-russia-helicopters-in-a-successful-attack-on-airfields/

@anderspuck Time for the Russians to move their aircraft and ammo dumps further back. Have fun with the logistics this winter, ruskies. 😉

@VikingChieftain @anderspuck The Berdyansk hit certainly eases operations on the Zaporizhzia axis. What of the Luhansk strike? If also successful, it would help defense on the eastern front.

@anderspuck USA finally parted with longer-range missiles so Ukraine can strike the forces striking it from behind Russian lines.

@VikingChieftain @anderspuck Amazing news!😍 Nice to hear about the effective hits and not a big announcement about how many units were being sent and when. Just make it happen and don’t let the enemy in on the details.

@lindamarie @anderspuck I hope that Biden and friends will push the envelope in the coming future and deliver the M48 version of ATACMS. It contains a 230 kg warhead instead of cluster munitions (which the M39 and M39A1 versions have). A 230 kg warhead would work wonders on the Kerch Bridge.

@VikingChieftain @anderspuck You know the weapons so well! There may be a strategy. It seems that the clusters are perfect in that particular setting—lots of fuel on the tarmac? And also for igniting their sprawling, messy ammo dumps.Hopefully this is the first stage, and the orc generals will be using the Kerch for their retreats. In terms of escalation, this version is also more “incremental” for those who still worry about such things. Looks a lot better now for getting to Tokmak this year!

@lindamarie @anderspuck Cluster munitions are great at carpeting and area with shrapnel (I'm sure the Russians find a lot of small pretty holes in their helicopters 😂 ), but they're not good at destroying bridges. The Kerch Bridge has go. Without it, the Russian logistics for the southern part will be difficult. 🙂 Tokmak this year would be wonderful, but there's too much stuff in-between where the Ukrainians currently are and that town. It will take some time. But it will fall one day. 🙂

@mk @VikingChieftain @lindamarie @anderspuck The birdsite is sick, but I had a looong thread on the subject.https://x.com/Peter_Hald_CHEM/status/1519269554039533568?s=20The main problem still stands: The bridge is huge, and it takes a lot of explosive to harm it, much more to destroy it.You have to move it, place it and ignite it.Bad placement = you need a bigger bomb.

@PeterHald @mk @lindamarie @anderspuck Very nice article. Yeah, bridges aren't easily demolished (unless you're talking about tofu-dreg bridge projects in China).https://web.archive.org/web/20230816210750/https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a44704259/kerch-bridge/But you can definitely use ATACMS to stop the traffic on the railway and road lanes long enough to make a difference. Once Ukrainian forces are in Crimea, they can use other means to render the bridge useless. Here's a working Nitter for Peter's thread:https://nitter.soopy.moe/Peter_Hald_CHEM/status/1519269554039533568

@VikingChieftain @mk @lindamarie @anderspuck Yup.Ukrainian creativity was not part of that thread. The first succesful attack was a VBIED. The Ukrainians have later said, that it was a truck with 21 tons of RDX hidden in rolls of plastic wrap. As a pressure charge on top of the bridge it overloaded a span, breaking it and pullimg other spans off their supports. By (IMHO) sheer luck a traind with fuel burned too on the railway bridge

@VikingChieftain @mk @lindamarie @anderspuck The second attack used naval drones, and the explosion under the bridge of a 400-800 kilo charge against (or close to) a pillar did not really harm the pillar, but made the span above it jump and dislocate. The third seems to have been modded S-200 missiles. They carry a fragmentation warhead that is nasty against soft targets but unlikely to damage the bridge. They will stop traffic.

@PeterHaldI have the feeling Ukraine is using modified S-200s to learn about the Russian air defense. Also, maybe it's live testing as they develop them into something new? And if they actually hit something during testing, so much the better. @VikingChieftain @mk @lindamarie @anderspuck

@notsoloud @PeterHald @VikingChieftain @mk @anderspuck What was the deal with the smoke screens they were pumping out awhile back? And can the USV’s (Sea Baby 😊) get around the stuff they’ve been putting in the water?

@lindamarie @notsoloud @PeterHald @VikingChieftain @mk The waterborne drones can sail around the obstacles, but having the obstacles makes it easier to surveil the area because Russia will know which areas to focus on.

@anderspuck @notsoloud @PeterHald @VikingChieftain @mk Ahh. Well, it’s a long bridge to surveil and I’m sure they’re figuring something out. Some diversion maybe? “Hey, look over there!” And then the pancake explodes! A nice thought to sleep on.🥱😴

@lindamarie @notsoloud @VikingChieftain @mk @anderspuck Smoke screens make sense against visually guided weapons. The weapon could be guided by an operator watching a camera over Starlink (In case Musky is not doing as his Russian handlers tell him to). Making it impossible to see the target will make it close to impossible to hit it..... if your last ditch defence against the drones relies on visually aimed machine guns, you may do as much harm to yourself.

@PeterHald @notsoloud @VikingChieftain @mk @anderspuck Didn’t our DoD provide Musk-proof coverage for Ukraine? Also, with thermal imaging, maybe a drone would at least be able to see the metal parts of the bridge…which is a key to where the concrete is. I haven’t seen anything lately about smokescreens. I have seen the ruskis taking out their own aircraft lately, though.😊

@lindamarie @PeterHald @notsoloud @VikingChieftain @mk I think the bigger potential is in submersible drones. If there is just a small antenna sticking up, it will be really difficult to defend against.

@anderspuck @lindamarie @PeterHald @notsoloud @mk The Russians know that the submersible drones are eventually coming. Were they smart enough to put nets between the sunken ships? But then again, they knew ATACMS were coming to Ukraine and they made pretty much no preparations to defend against them. 🤔

@VikingChieftain @lindamarie @PeterHald @notsoloud @mk A submersible drone would be able to transit the main corridor. Then they would have to put up nets and remove them whenever a ship passes.

@anderspuck @lindamarie @PeterHald @notsoloud @mk But it would require timing, and the longer you wait, the more time the Russians have to spot your submersible. Parts of your submersible will probably remain above the surface, such as the antenna and periscope, to detect your opportunity to go through.
