One of the easiest ways to start an unecessery and pointless slapfight is ask a bunch of goths if it's the fashion or the music that defines someone as a goth. The idea that goth has a shared idiom that can manifest in various creative way across multiple disciplines, the way artistic movements and subcultures have worked for literal centuries is evidently not on the table in this dichotomy.

I think where this argument starts is that a lot of people think of fashion less like a creative outlet or artistic discipline and more a way to signal what categories you belong to.

Frankly, I'm not sure we can even define "the music" in a meaningful way. Most classic 'goth' bands don't think of themselves as goth, and there are plenty of bands that fit the idiom really well, and who might even think of themselves as such, but if you suggest they are a goth band, people are gonna tear you apart.

If there's one common thread across all goths I know, it's not fondness of a specific genre, it's a sense that music can be used to express a particular mood or aesthetic. Finding music that speaks to them, that appeal to their particular artistic sensibilities, is a favorite pasttime of many goths.
