       What are the shell aliases you find it difficult to live without?For me it's `set -o vi` keybindings (or `bindkey -v` if you're into C-shells) and ll='ls -l'.#unix #linux #shell #bash #ksh

@jbowen I set grep=“grep -i” since I’m rarely aware of case sensitivity when I’m searching for something

@jbowenI alias `rm`, `cp`, and `mv` to have the `-i` option by default on systems where I want to be particularly careful about overwriting things. (but not on all systems because I don't want to train myself to assume they will ask for confirmation)#unix #Linux #shell

@diazona yeah, there's a balance there to strike. It is definitely good advice, though :)

@brandon Fair enough. grep -i is pretty reflexive for me these days. Though often I'll drop the first letter of the word I'm searching for to get around casing.I'm also using ripgrep a lot these days.

@jbowen I’ve heard good things about ripgrep. There are a lot of tools like that I think I’d like, bat, exa, etc but I feel like I’m constantly switching servers and don’t have the same tools installed everywhere. This is what held me back from using zsh for so long too.

@brandon On my primary workstations at home and work, I have things like that, also fd, difftastic, gping (one of my favorite things), and gron (the one non-Rust thing on this list). At work it's a mix of RHEL, Ubuntu, and AIX, so I'm usually not working with any "niceties".Then at home I have BSDs and Linux. So all of that keeps me to writing out commands long-form.BUT, as long as I can have vi-like keybindings and `ll`, I'm perfectly comfortable.

@jbowen for me, it's ls="exa --list-directories-first" as I always prefer rust tools over everything else and want to see the directories first almost every time.

@thuhtoosan On my "primary" systems I have `exa` installed and have `alias ll='exa --long'.Speaking of Rust tools, do you use Zellij? I try it every once in a while, but I've been using tmux for sooooo long it's just difficult to change.

@jbowen I'm always wary of adding flags that I may forget I added that could get me into trouble, so would not advise aliasing command+flags to command, always make a new command like ll (which is always a surprise when I get command-not-found!)

@jbowen No, I haven't heard about Zellij. I just took a look, it looks cool but I don't think I'll ever use it as I prefer a clean UI with mandatory rounded corners (like Black Box). This is the same reason why I don't use Tmux either.
