@MeBigbrain @rlier23 nobody called narnia an isekai, they called it fantasy. isekai is already making terms for things that already exist, which is 'fantasy.' isekai means something formulaic with standard tropes like dwarves elves witches faries etc, often a shallow edgy protagonist for the audience to self-insert to who goes around doing the right thing, therefore berserk is native isekai. it's not a perfect fit because berserk doesn't have game mechanics yet

Because that's usually the defining aspect of isekai (literally translates to "other world"), whether it's through summoning, reincarnation, or some other means.Nobody called Narnia an isekai because Narnia predates isekai, it technically fits the most basic definition. Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz do as well. Yojo Senki is an isekai despite having no game mechanics, the game mechanics aren't necessary to the genre.

@All_bonesJones @rlier23 I mean that Yojo Senki is a pretty well-known example, it's not "technically" an isekai like the other things I mentioned, it's regarded as one of the more famous ones.Parsing out what is necessary to the genre and what is merely commonly associated with it is essential for defining what the genre actually is. Isekai is almost always fantasy and relies on fantasy elements, but that just means that those stories fall into both genres, fantasy and isekai. It doesn't make sense to then say that every fantasy is therefore isekai, some of them are just "native isekai." A therefore B does not imply B therefore A.
