When you download and install a new app on your phone or tablet and it asks for certain permissions to use for example your location or access to contacts or photos, first ask yourself: "what could this function be of use to this app?" If you can't find a good reason just "don't allow" itIf the app does not work without that certain permission you can always change it laterBetter to be safe and don't overshare data 😉

@stux "Naff off" is a frequently-heard phrase here in Castle Carfax. :blobcatwink:

@stux my "favorite" is how most bluetooth pairings require GPS for "reasons".Such. Bullshit.

@stux I wish apps were required to provide as much functionality as possible without permissions. For example the fitbit app should be able to do most of its work without an internet connection, but it is basically bricked without an internet connection. So annoying

@stux And then vendors gripe about people not upgrading. After having upgraded other apps and finding functionality stripped and more invasive permissions required because the company got bought by shitholes like Google or some VCs who want to wring out the users.I don't let anything "upgrade" if it already works. It's always worse after upgrading. See also Apple iOS, Android, macos.

@stux there should be app audit logs, to see what/when/how apps get data

@stux I use appops, through which I can trick apps into thinking they have certain permissions, but when they actually try to use them they get empty or fake data :blobcatdevil:

@stux If the app won't work without pointless permissions, I start looking for alternative ways to do whatever I wanted it for.

@stux if it doesn’t work, always find another one. It really isn’t worth it.

@stux Yes, you can always change it later.By removing the app.

@stux Or you could be like me and when an app asks for permissions just delete the app.
