       @arrdem A bit exaggerated but it covers my own experience, not only with FOSS but any programming whatsoever... OTOH, if it is a new concept, rather than fixing a bug or adding a simple feature, that time needed to find "focus" (I call it inspiration), should happen after the "problem is defined", so that my brain can "explore" the solution options in the background. If I attack the problem immediately, the solution is typically pretty bad and needs to be started over later.
