       @futurebird @llewelly if vertebrates went extictt do you think invertebrates would eventually grow to large sizes? like could there be insects the size of dogs and beyond? if it did happen, what features would you expect to evolve that would allow such a thing?

       @gay_ornithischians There’s an upper size limit to insects given their respiratory systems I think.@futurebird @llewelly

       @Kencf618033 @futurebird @llewelly but don't you think a lung analog would have the chance to emerge if all the niches that vertebrates cover were vacated?

       @gay_ornithischians @Kencf618033 @futurebird I do. Coconut crabs already have such a thing, and arthopods in general have evolved numerous different ways of breathing, so something new could very well evolve, enabling larger sizes.Similar applies to internal support; there are arthopods whose digestive tracts are partially lined with the same materials as their outer cuticle, and to me it seems possible they could evolve some sort of interal support system.

       @llewelly @gay_ornithischians @Kencf618033 @futurebird At what point does that internal support required for larger invertebrates turn the invertebrates into, well, a vertebrate?

       @zalasur @llewelly @gay_ornithischians @Kencf618033 @futurebird The same way a platypus is a mammal...

       @gay_ornithischians @futurebird @llewelly Yes... evolution is weirdDivergent evolution, gene writers... hell even bacteria have sex so I wouldn't count it out of the impossible (I still remember when people were all like nothing can possibly live in that hot/salty/cold an environment and now we have TAQ and PCR.)

       @Aviva_Gary @zalasur @llewelly @Kencf618033 @futurebird because vertebrate is a clade non vertebrates would never become vertebrates no matter how similar they become. also not at all the same way a platypus is a mammal since the platy evolved within the mammal clade. this would be more similar to the way sharks and dolphins resemble each other

       @gay_ornithischians @zalasur @llewelly @Kencf618033 @futurebird True but all I was trying to point out is even with all our knowledge and things that little mo'fo is still fucking with us...DNA, skeletons, observations etc the thing just does what it wants!So because Mind Goblin was saying when do you draw the line between something in vertebrate name only and when you don't (They can correct me if I'm wrong) the platypus would be the model for how we currently deal with such things...

       @gay_ornithischians @Aviva_Gary @zalasur @Kencf618033 @futurebird I feel like biology really hasn't done a good job of communicating how completely cladistics changes every aspect of taxonomy.
