It wasn't like, a rule, but criticizing Matrix even just a few months ago just got you eye rolls and dismissals, but now I guess one or two people successfully said the emperor has no clothes and now people accept it.

@ElDeadKennedy @Moon i liked psyc :blobcatderpy: matrix i think shit the bed with the graph merging protocol. it makes it real hard to do anything. like if someone is banned its still legal for them to spam because they just insert the events in the graph before they were banned, and there's no way to discern between that and a genuine netsplit. and the docs straight up say this because they have recommendations for how clients should render such an attack

@Moon the thing is, i think many people are going overboard with it, saying that matrix is trash and has always been trash. I have used matrix for years and it was alright. these days i'd probably rather run xmpp or just use signal if i need free software, or telegram or whatsapp if i don't care.

@Moon there is no guarantee the new consensus is better/more accurate than the old one. that said, i have been always of two minds about it: the E2EE and federation aspects were always a big value-add to me, but the UX also always had questionable directions. I wouldn't even permit redactions that cause your client to drop data, for example

@lain I just had constant problems with performance and malfunctioning rooms so my opinion of it is very negative. Also when I wrote 10grans bot I immediately ran into problems, filed an issue on their github and it didn't get fixed for over two years.

@Moon yeah, i'm with you there. I don't like the thing where people ignore arguments against "their side" and arguments for "the enemy side". There's nothing so great or so terrible to be worth doing that for.I just wanted to jump into the details

@PostingHellbound I am actually running a Matrix server again just for myself that was written in Rust, and it's maybe 90% working correctly, I can't enter one of my own rooms from the old server for some vague "compatibility" reason.

@Moon@shitposter.club I prefer IRC, but I am also very active on Matrix and it's generally fine. Synapse, from what I've seen and engaged with, is a hot mess. It's looking that Dendrite is going to really streamline and simplify things and "mature" the whole package, so earnestly looking forward to that project reaching prime-time.

What exactly is required for people to see it as "real"? people are actively using it. Does it need to look and act identically? Fosscord was working on it but they got sued into oblivion

@olmitch@shitposter.club I don't understand what your talking about or what your hangup here is? Are we discussing Matrix the protocol and its implementations therein or are we talking about clients like Element? I was referring to Matrix-Synapse, specifically.

@olmitch@shitposter.club I'm talking about Matrix the protocol, agnostic to any particular client. My personal experience with trying to deploy a Matrix-Synapse instance/server has been that it's messy with lots of moving parts and very temperamental.

They never fixed the problem of "too much undocumented, too much changing so fast that no alternative implementation can catch up"It's been years. Where's the rewrite away from Python?

@feld @Moon honestly, i think never having any real alternative (both client and server side) was probably good as it made it possible for them to experiment with changes, nearly as much as a proprietary server would do. but then being wedded to an inefficient 'platonic world of ideas' type protocol makes even less sense.

@Moon They say some nice things conceptually but every time I look into it they are several years away from it being implemented in a usable manner.I also don't like how Element was written with the assumption of one account/identity on a universally federated network, with no regard for IRC-style usage of accounts/identities on other, disconnected networks (or even multiple accounts/identities on the same IRC network!)
