Everyone fits. Build my DAW next. Anyone switched to lunix for this successfully?I keep a powerful computer on windows for video games and music, and dabble every few years in the FOSS for Linux boxes, but its never quite as good, even as FL, so any guidance appreciated. The motivation to leave windows entirely, has never been higher.

@bifpowell I have been an audio engineer for 25 years and switched exclusively to linux in early 2021. I have not seen any more or less problems in linux audio that I experienced with mac or windows. I have several audio interfaces and have run into very few issues with them (near zero). I use Ardour as my DAW and remapped the shortcuts to mirror protools (been using protools since v7) and it's a very strong program. With Jack control the routing flexibility is almost endless...

@bifpowell For live sound I use my linux based laptop with Room EQ Wizard for SPL, RTA, and system tuning, Ardour for capture, and most people use m32’s and x32’s these days and there are linux packages for their computer based remote control. Yabridge will enable you to use windows based plugins in linux (if needed) and carla provides waves rack like stand alone plug in processing.

@bifpowell I do not use pipewire, just pulse audio and alsa and have been pleased with the results. There are certain configurations that need to be met for Ardour to run smoothly but, once met it runs well.Recently I have been experimenting with Ambisonics for surround mixing with Ardour, it’s a bit cumbersome but doable and with xjadeo as the video server Audo Post Production is attainable.

Just moving shit in, put up huge shelf. Displays will tuck perfectly, monitor-speakers probably should mount to wall in the end. Egg crate acoustic treatments soon. I have enough to cover every surface, but how much is too much?...doesn't someone by now have "dead room" app where you lay a mic/phone down on the middle, it beeps and boops and then says "its a cathedral in here, to reduce ambient reverb, add 18.5 sq ft ac. absorb split between one wall and the ceiling."

@Thebrandonwelch yeah, pic HDR'd a bit, but the top really is great - the neck is very non-Gibsony (thin, fast) and it's the only semi (Fender would call it thin-line, I guess) LP I've seen and there aren't very many of these...it was a Guitar Center order back a decade or so ago - super unique axe. They called it the Les Paul Special AAA Flame Top. Lots of grit when you want it, push pull both places. That F-hole might as well be a sustainiac ;)

@ReadyKilowatt @bifpowell I saw some large rolls of double-sided tape meant to hang things on walls with. If it's anything like that 3M press and release reusable stuff then you can hang panels today and be able to easily remove them for painting tomorrow and then put them back on when done.

@mhjohnson @bifpowell The problem with tapes is that the foam doesn't have enough contact with it to really adhere. That said, I've used some that come with double sided adhesive discs that seem to be staying up over time.

@ErikBlair I got this all setup and working well using this tutorial, I THINK everything is set to start using Ardour, but I wonder about the selections of audio-system and driverI'm using a scarlett solo 3rd gen, it's working, settings appear normal - when I start ardour I get some options and you said to use JACK but then driver setting I get ALSA, OSS...bunch of stuff - any guidance there?I'm not manual averse, just looking for quick-start to poke around in the app before crash-course

@bifpowell If you're not planning to use JACK, ALSA works fine. JACK comes into play when you want to reroute (zoom call, web audio, media player) audio in to or out of Ardour. I would say that (if you feel up to it) do some playing with JACK as it is very flexible when it comes to audio routing. ie using Guitarix in it's stand alone mode; capturing DI guitar signal into Ardour and sending that to Guitarix and monitor with that sound. Then have the ability to change it later

@bifpowell As far a emulation goes, it's no fractal audio (fractalaudio.com) and not much beats a good microphone in front of a tube guitar amp. I use it a lot for working out ideas or if I just want to play bass or guitar while watching videos or playing along with them. It's definitely decent though.Glad to help and feel free to reach out at any time. Also glad to hear you're making headway.Godspeed.

@ErikBlair If I keep searching, will I be able to listen to youtube AND run Ardour using jack? - I'm kind of getting jack figured out and I really see the power but this is kind of eluding me on the surface...some recommend pipething and some say stay away?...then seems like it's not recommended, but you can do alsaxyz but everything I find seems like a work-around, when it shouldn't be?..

@ErikBlair "Room EQ Wizard for SPL, RTA, and system tuning, Ardour for capture, and most people use m32’s and x32’s these days and there are linux packages for their computer based remote control"in a nutshell, when/why would I look into this? For now I will do like beat building and production right in the DAW (have not checked yet, but I presume some drum-machine situation in Ardour like FL?) and then recording from sm57 and sm58 and I will experiment with mic'd amp + DI amp gtr doubling

@bifpowell You will be able to listen to youtube and run ardour at the same time. I do not use pipething, just straight jack and alsa. qjackctl is a good GUI for it and just be sure to get the alsa-jack package as well. I interface my electric drums and use an ezdrummer like plugin with carla to play along with drumless backing tracks on youtube for practice. I'm not home at the moment but when I get back I'll give you more info on how to go about it. No workarounds are needed.

@bifpowell Hydrogen is a decent drum machine like FL and you will need to have jack running to interface it with ardour (to sync timecode). You can also program beats right into ardour. Unfa has a lot of tutorials on ardour midi. https://www.youtube.com/@unfa00/videosWhen I get home I'll get some examples on my github and share with you. Roomeqwizard is great for eqing speakers to minimize deficiencies in the room (helps with standing waves and room modes)
