My HP Pavilion is on its 2nd trip to HP care in only 2 years. Fediverse- how useful is an iPad if you primarily use your laptop for MS Word & Excel, internet browsing/social media posting, and e-ebook reading? I am ready to make the jump to Apple but am not sure on whether to get a new iPad MacBook. It’s for play, not work.#Apple #iPad #MacBook

@SeaGoatGirl Buy a used Dell, generic PC. Apple is proprietary and HP hates its customers. Run Linux for FREE and boycott brands.

@ecsd Thanks. I wish I had more tech knowledge to run Linux. It might be a side project one of these days, but I don’t want to try it out on my main personal computer.

@SeaGoatGirl @ecsd There are companies like @system76, @purism, and Starlab Systems that sell Linux pre-installed on computers. They are not part of big tech.

@rychard @ecsd @system76 @purism Thanks, are they useful for people who aren’t tech savvy? It seems like you need some knowledge beyond the basics of to use a laptop. I can use mine (when it’s functioning) but I don’t know how it all actually works.

@SeaGoatGirl @rychard @ecsd @system76 @purism Note app versions of MS word and excel will not work on linux very easily, however browser versions of the app can still be accessed very easily and work perfectly. Anything that you do on your browser should be identical to anything that you have tried in the past. Gaming on linux has also become a lot easier with Steam Proton and wine

@colemak @SeaGoatGirl @rychard @system76 @purism I don't know what "app versions of MS word and excel" are. The LibreOffice replacements for word and excel are quite similar and are interoperable SFAIK.=The one thing I miss from the Windows world is Unreal Tournament GOTY 98. It won't work on wine because too much extra junk is missing after installing UT. I'd like a hand with that. Otherwise, Windows is anathema, good riddance. They can't support the correct point size for the word OBSOLETE for Windows, I think that's in the neighborhood of 8 AU.

@ecsd just wanted to notify if they needed it for work, as some companies require them to use some applications. Especially if they need to do collaborative cloud work with Office. I will second the use of LibreOffice, the devs have really done a great job with it.

@colemak The companies may require a FORMAT, like "docx" for documents. That doesn't matter, as I said, since LibreOffice can read/write/modify such documents IN THAT FORMAT. I am not bothered by the format requirement.I /WOULD/ be bothered if they went so far as to mandate the USE OF MS PROGRAMS, but I wouldn't take such a job.All the corporations that have "standardized" on the use of MSware are behind the times. In fact, NO GOVERNMENT OFFICES and NO SCHOOLS should be using MSware any longer, because THAT'S EXPENSIVE and for no valid reason. For example, the Ann Arbor library system provides Linux machines for public use, and /nobody is the least put out/, while Ann Arbor is saving many THOUSANDS of dollars annually. That should be replicated nationwide.

@ecsd I fully agree to that statement. I hate Microsoft, as most do. I personally am still forced to use it, not becuase of the file format, but due to real time collaborative means, as well as sharing different folders with teachers for marking via OneDrive. Formatting sometimes also breaks when it shows up on MSWord, which is quite annoying. I just wish schools and companies can give us more freedom in the software we use. Some people are forced to use Windowsatwork

@colemak @ecsd FOSS and private collaborative office suites are provided with cryptpad, nextcloud, and other server installations. Ping me if you want to know options.

@Bernard @colemak I would discuss them with @colemak. They need them (I don't use Windows to begin with.) From what @colemak said, I wonder if their "usage path" cannot be all or in part replaced by open-source. If so, I would take the substitutions to the IT people / school board / school board MEETINGS and say "see?"

@ecsd @colemak Many schools in Europe are migrating to https://nextcloud.com/education/ because they want their kids to learn about computers rather than have computers learn about their kids. Nextcloud is self hosted and free, but the company provides support agreements which help fund the active maintenance and development. cryptpad.fr is a much simpler suite of collaborative office docs not as well suited for schools. It is quite a battle to get schools to change. Good luck.
