I really don't understand how people tolerate #Windows. I booted back into my Windows 11 install tonight, and it was a total shit show. AMD graphics driver needed to update, but it couldn't because there was a Windows update pending. When that finally finished and I rebooted, the graphics driver update took a solid 15 minutes (I have gigabit internet...) And then the ads: "Try Xbox Game Pass!" "Turn on your OneDrive backup!" Meanwhile, the system is running SO SLOW compared to Kubuntu.

@killyourfm I have a job due to this insanity. But when does the insanity start to affect me? Cause I’m already doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

And I don't say this because I'm some diehard Linux fanboy with tunnel vision drinking the kool-aid. I use macOS too. And I have no incentive to get people to switch to Linux (like "Read my #Linux articles" or "Follow my Linux gaming channel). No, I'm just saying this because Windows is objectively a terrible user experience, and it runs like crap.

@killyourfm you're right. Windows is actually even on its own terrible. I need it though but it's still such a bad experience. It boots up and always seems to deteriorate overtime

@killyourfm I helped a friend recently with their new Windows 11 laptop because their email account (Outlook) was no longer receiving emails. It said they'd run out of space and needed to upgrade even though they have hardly any emails.Turns out when Microsoft gets you to enable OneDrive to 'Backup' your computer, it chews into the free space they've given you for email. Their desktop had a bunch of photos and documents that had filled their cloud storage up, so now their email didn't work.

@beemdvp Right? Give any Windows install about 3 to 6 months, and you'll be begging for a nuke and pave because of how slow and unreliable it has become.

@killyourfm slow, unreliable, breaks if you don't keep up to date. Resets my devices whenever it feels like it. Adds the same bloatware I uninstalled ages ago. It feels like im in an EA game with several micro transactions with a sprinkle of AI nonsense just PVA glued in for no reason

@killyourfm It's because there's a whole lot of people who spent the 90s getting trained on and used to Windows, and they'd rather put up with a terrible user experience than learn something new. They're wrong, but that's just how it is. The thought of change, even a relatively simple one to a user friendly distribution like *buntu or Elementary or something, is way more frightening and daunting than just putting up with all the garbage in Windows.

@killyourfm Yeah, part of my work day is maintaining my company laptop, updating it, watching it install dodgy software, rebooting all the time, etc. I waste so much time because of Windows things.

@Jojonintendo If large (or small, really) companies scaled up that wasted time across the entire organization, I wonder if they'd think twice about using Windows...

@killyourfm me at work, there is every day at least one person who calls because some new crap landed by itself on this users PC and I need to remove it. Even in company networks that's by now the case, just via windows update. It's not nice. But since there is no microsoft office for linux, there is no way to make anyone switch.

@killyourfmNot to speak of that (in my case also Kubuntu, but it could be others), my 14 years old Aldi laptop stills boots in a few seconds and runs all typical consumer software without any problems. Even Kdenlive. This is also a question of sustainability.Isn't it absurd that we produce tons and tons of electronic waste, because of the decisions of a single software company?

@killyourfm Windows is just ad supported shareware. People just don't realize it. All the innovations from Windows 10 and 11 are just telemetry and subscription services.

@killyourfm It’s a shitshow. I had to change my password yesterday because some IT admin somewhere still thinks it’s 1999 and set a 90 day expiry, and today Windows decides to start accepting my old password again, after the new work worked fine for a day.

@killyourfm I’ve avoided upgrading to Windows 11 but my experience on Windows 10 is nothing short of awful. It’s sluggish, constant junk popups, random reboots - drives me absolutely crazy.

@killyourfm I don't understand it either. I switched when they started showing full screen, unavoidable popups to "finish setting up Windows" which were just an ad for all of their products I wasn't using. I'm so happy they did that, because Linux is great.

@killyourfm I'd take Windows over Mac so I wasn't restricted in what hardware I can use and at least it runs things I want to use. That being said both are terrible options that I am glad I have alternatives for.

@killyourfm Currently running Fedora 38, no real complaints. It boots faster than my three-year-old Mac. Yesterday my Mac installed their video app without even asking and it took forever. When I had to use Windows, in my office jockey days, I would boot up my computer and walk away for 15 minutes because it was impossible to get anything done in those 15 minutes on the computer. It was like waiting for water to boil with a match under the pan.

@killyourfm As soon as my windows was set up on a new system, i installed LinuxMint dual boot and not looked back, so I am with you kinda scared to boot in to windows.I think you can turn off ads as part of the set up process, once I bypassed the sign up to MS garbage, I wasn't really in the mood for any more of their nonsense.I am more worried that windows will detect dual boot and somehow try and fix the boot sector and break dual booting,

@killyourfm Switched back to Windows about a year ago because software support, and I'm feeling this more and more lately. I really want to try out the new COSMIC when it comes out, but I'm afraid I'll still be saddled to Windows because app support for many industry standard engineering programs. No, I'm not gonna start using FreeCAD to replace SolidWorks.

@killyourfm The other day I had to install the drivers on Windows 10 for our Brothers printer (raffle prize from my Ubuntu Users days!).According to Brother, it should work ™ out of the box®.Turned out I had to search for the model in some Advanced Settings. That loaded in minutes. Then updating the driver in some hidden corner for Optional Updates (like also Firmware updates that stalled since YEARS).People pay for this?!

@killyourfm Not to mention Windows 11 obsoletes machines older than about 3 years for no good reason. And don't get me started on convoluted Microsoft licensing, which is probably the #1 reason I prefer open source.
