Truth, but there is a flip side to that. The places that have these are part of a race to the bottom. People go to them instead of local grocers that don't do this because their prices are lower, and it's not like it's even a huge difference- I've seen people drive twenty miles and burn a dollar's worth of gas to save a nickel on a single gallon of milk. As long as people chase the cheapest thing to the exclusion of all other considerations, there will be places like this to cater to them. It does not affect me at all, because I don't go to those places- I stick to local shops or the internet for the handful of things they don't carry, and I'm healthier and better off for it.Also, local businesses notice and appreciate it- they start finding ways to make what you need affordable if you're a reliable customer- Walmart don't give a shit.

i fucking love those. at a local grocery store they hire more employees to stock shelves and help out. its a small grocery store and it is pretty fast. I get to chat with employees while they are in the isles. got some history on overweightea which is now save on foods.

Here in Oregon the State changed the rules so people could pump their own gas. Almost all the gas station attendants were laid off pretty quick. Its really sad. For some people, they genuinely need the job, or that's all they can really do for whatever reason. The gas prices did not lower ONE CENT at any station. There need to be more laws to protect workers.

I don't know if globalism is intrinsically tied to automation. Automation is the result of logical progressions in technologies, and the reason they are adopted in mass is a byproduct of capitalism.The self-checkouts were slowly & tepidly rolled out because the companies knew that customers felt angry about them. But you reach a point where no one cares, and now we're at that point.It's not that the companies didn't have enough people it's a simple fact that they don't have to pay that machine every week. It doesn't need any benefits or healthcare etc.A lot of the things we hate globalism for are intrinsically tied to capitalism.And libertarians/conservative types are often extremely pro-capitalism because of the other ism. I'm not against capitalism, but I do think it undermines healthy national & cultural institutions. In many ways you could say globalism is the product of capitalism.

I was at a Walmart and a woman decided she wasn't going to pay so she just pushed her cart out the door. The cashier stopped her and got in a fierce argument with the woman who just kept driving the cart out the door with the cashier flailing her arms. Security guard did nothing. What difference does it make if a machine or human can't collect payment.

There could have been a cashier involved there, but you denied them a job with the convenience of ordering online.Just because there can be a job doesn't mean that there should be. If 90% of cashiering can be automated, it probably should be. Good to know you'll be filling up your car with gas ONLY from the gas stations that employ attendants who pump the gas for you.I, for one, consider self-checkouts as a blessing. I hate standing in a long line of carts overflowing with purchases, and the customers are showing their phones to the checkout clerk who then has to get a supervisor to figure something out. I've waited as long as 45 minutes in such lines. When I go in those places I most often have only one or two items, but that doesn't matter to those who whine about the self-checkouts. If the shops fill every checkout with a clerk, will you be willing to pay the higher prices that will be necessary?The future is now so you may as well get used to it. Automation and self-service have long been around and will become more ubiquitous.

Yup, walmart for sure always had a skeleton crew. When I worked there I had to work in different departments including the register roughly twice a week. It was the same for all the other employees, outside of electronics, normal cashiers, and pharmacy.
