Honestly my favorite part of the #AppleEvent was the Mother Nature sketch. That was funny at least. But, I guess I will be buying a new iPhone. Basically the same price. Still too expensive, but I won't be buying another until 2027 at the earliest.

I cannot relate. #AppleEvent #Apple products fall squarely in the "expensive junk" category for me. No marketing, peer pressure of publicity event could convince me to buy one of their products new. If a used one was given to me, there's a chance I may use it ( older Macs with #Linux Mint #Debian Edition are usable)

I do not regularly use a mobile phone. I use a #Linux laptop or my desktop with phone dot com (thinking of switching to openphone.com) for almost all of my text and phone calls. While out and about, I use a mobile hotspot from US Cellular and only turn it on when I am using it. I do have a backup Android phone that I can connect to the hotspot if my laptop ever would fail or loose battery power. I keep it in airplane mode almost all the time. Mainly have it because one of my contracting jobs wants me to use Google Authenticator App, which can still be used while in airplane mode.

@thelinuxcast @matthew I've been heavily considering buying a Pinephone. I'm not a super heavy phone user, but I think it'd be a fun way to dig deeper into learning Linux.

I have a #pinephone that I am not using right now. I should experiment with putting my mobile hot spot SIM card in and see if it just works with that mobile data plan.

I should try #mobian on the #pinephone. What hardware do you use it on? (if you use it)

@matthew @debacle Isn't Goolge Authenticator App just doing TOTP? aka, can be replaced by Bitwarden, or any TOTP client?

Good question. I do not know. Would be great to replace it with something else. I'll have to look into #TOTP more and understand what's going on behind the scenes with Google Athenticator.

I rarely take pictures, but I do carry the backup Android phone, so could use that if the need arose. I also don't listen to music while driving or walking. I could easily use a dedicated mp3 player for music, audiobooks and podcasts if I wanted to, though, without a phone.

@matthew @debacle #TOTP is "store a secret seed for your clock-based hash generator". Google Authenticator has cannibalized its usage via "just scan this QR in that fancy app" to ease with the secret seed transfer. But it's usual for TOTP requests to allow bypassing the QR code prompt. You can then feed the seed into _any_ TOTP client; optclient (GTK), Bitwarden (via Vaultwarden hosting), etc.

@OdyX @matthew I use TOTP with pass, using the Debian package "pass-extension-otp". To scan the QR code, I use zbarimg:$ zbarimg -q --raw qrcode.png | pass otp append my/pass/storepass + TOTP works well with webext-browserpass in Firefox, btw.

@neil @matthew I often take a camera with me when out and about. I also cycle for fitness/leisure and only take a dumb 'phone with me as they're little and less prone to sweat damage after a couple of hours against a very sweaty back!Less so an MP3 player although I use one of those in my vehicle rather than a 'phone more often than not.

I have a #pinephone that I haven't used much. I'll be putting #mobian on it and giving it a try again. I'm okay to have it as a secondary device, as I really do prefer using a laptop or PC for calls most of the time.

@matthew @thelinuxcast @olmitch On a related note, the og pinephone is software wise better than the pro. Its somewhat unfortunate but its improving.

I've been pondering it tonight, and one must manage expectations. If having a telephone, a device you can make and receive calls on, send and receive messages, and have a terminal and shit, which is running Linux on both the CPU AND the modem(!!!) then the Pinephone is ready for you today. Expecting it to replace a modern Android or Apple device, well I feel like you need the pinephone and a tablet or laptop to replace the other phone if you use it a lot. For me my Moto is my main PC if we're being honest. The app ecosystem for traditional freedesktop.org style Linux is... so I'm gonna try Sailfish here in a bit

yeah I dunno phosh is phosh, the whole ecosystem is kind just sitting there. I feel like most people are gravitating to something like /e/ or sailfish at this point. "Sailfish is daily driver ready on Pinephone" is a claim I've heard

What made you say meh? The lack of freedesktop.orgeyness? there's a lot of good apps for it, and I like fluid UI. Convergence is out the window but at least it's not Android I guess?

For anyone who wants to know what the fuck I mean about freedesktop.orgeyness, it's kind of like how most Linux distros are Gnu Linux? most desktop systems other than Chrome OS are using a shit ton of Freedesktop.org stuff so I'm just going to use it as a catchall term for the classic Linux X11/Wayland desktops like KDE,Gnome et all https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/

I just checked UBports progress and they have made a TON! They're on the final milestone before upstream https://gitlab.com/ook37/pinephone-pro-debos/-/releases>This is intended to be the last release of Ubuntu Touch 20.04 on this GitLab page. Our next release will come from upstream UBPorts source directly, if all goes well. This will come with a significant change to how the filesystems have been running - they will go from r/w images with standard booting to a more secure a/b boot with r/o images. This will be a larger group effort, in which I will be able to hand over a lot of the reigns, so I want to thank everyone who has supported me as I've solo-spearheaded this project for the last 8 months. It's been spectacular!
