Is this real? The whole point of social media is to direct attention to the tiny corners of the internet. To collectively decide what information, perspectives and creative works should go viral. Attention democracy, as opposed to advertisers and big media dictating to us like they have for decades. What we write here is supposed to be small and only exist to serve that larger cultural/community mission imo. But Elon clearly thinks it should be about his algorithm and bottom line, not us at all.

@wjmaggos twitter already sucked but it definitely seemed to have become worse since musk took over. i have an account for verifying myself on other platforms (art stuff). whenever i actually try to use it i just end up demotivated.

@wjmaggosThis is in line with stage 2 corporate social media enshittification. Once user growth stagnates, the company focus shifts away from benefitting the userbase and toward wringing money out of it.

@MartinDeLaToot social media is not great for serious conversations.the open web was a revolution for free expression. everyone could now communicate with everyone, but big media still decided what most people thought about etc, because getting lots of attention to websites largely depended on big media. virality changes this. we just need to better exploit it with more adoption and better tools. connect everything into our own decentralized social graphs instead of ads and corporate algos.
