Tech like cryptocurrency (blockchains) and AI for example are from a nerd perspective super interesting but from an ethical perspective it's just terrible..The blockchain is mostly mis-used in so many ways and AI is stealing our work left and right while feeding it back to usPersonally I stay faaar away from these subjects even though they are interesting, I want to learn stuff on my own and not with an "AI assistance" that maybe can replace me in the future

GitHub CoPilot for example is a subscription based "AI coding assistance"So, you pay GitHub to use their AI to "help you" code but meanwhile your are training their AIReCaptcha training is bad enough with Google.. Why would you pay for training an AIAnd yes I understand that it's "easy" but your training your replacement while paying for it

@stux do you think it'll actually get good enough to replace proper coding?I mean, I use Gen AI all the time for summaries and writing, but it definitely cannot replace truly original and thought through material.... but then you get the super meta "LMMs of LLMs" that I suppose might be able to do that one day...?

@stux I dont relly know if blockschains can never be not misused. At least i never thought it is the best for all its use cases. On AI i only use the open source stuff for memes or testing concepts so my money stays out and i am not risking anyone's job while benefiting. When i somehow need it quickly or want to test a commercial platform i throw trashmails at those services and go on until they want any real information's.At least that is my strat

@stux I don't see AI replacing developers for anything more significant than boilerplate code. It requires interpreting business requirements and using preexisting frameworks specific to their job. If a person has to ask questions for both of these, I don't see an AI ever advancing to that level.AI will be a tool to accelerate development but humans will have to remain involved throughout the process and then there will still be loads of code reviews and testing

@StrykerNoStriking Hard to say 😉 Maybe not for entire projects but for sure for the small and simpler parts for exampleI'm not sure where it will end but I'd rather not find out the hard way to be honestIt advanves so very quickly and when it comes to coding and AI i find it somehow a little scary

@trebach Not for entire projects indeed, for sure not at first but for the simpler stuff for sureI don't know where it will end, look at the rate of progress, it's a little scary

@stux Well, I do use GitHub Copilot, and it's actually a big help. While it doesn't read your mind, it often provides helpful hints. It also saves much time when writing boilerplate code, so you can focus on the aspects that actually matter. Why would I want to do tasks that can be automated?By the way, I don't pay for Copilot, and I have chosen not to “allow GitHub to use my code snippets for product improvements”.

@stux The tech may indeed have valid use cases, but the hype propels it into a status where if you’re not seen to be implementing it you’re yesterday’s news. VC speculation drives all this, pump and dump, make money out of it and step away when it reaches peak.

@pixelcode :blobcatgiggle: i understand but i want to do that myself :bloblaugh: It's simply some copy pasting so perfectly doable myself haha! For now it won't do much harm but im not sure where it will end and that's what worries me a bitHow did you manage to get it for free? 😮 in trade for let it using your code?

@stux I can see that. It's doing the same thing in other industries, but I have a little faith in the future for two reasons (or at least, this is how I justify it to myself):I try to only use LLMs sourced from opt-in-only data sets, especially if it's work related. So pony up for Adobe Firefly vs Dall-E, Writer vs ChatGPT, etc.If it's going to replace grunt work, and if your job is at risk because you can't use human critical thinking skills... Frankly? I think it's a kick in the ass to get gud. I know it's made me polish my own skills.(... She says, speaking as a baby programmer when AI helped a lot when I couldn't figure out why my python script wasn't populating a CSV file correctly, even when I quadruple-checked the list. 😅 I'd overcomplicated my code and got too fancy / excited with the new thing I learned, and there was a function I hadn't realized existed...)

@stux This makes me somehow thinking about "smart homes". People buy surveillance devices to give out all their datas for free. 🤔 #Alexa #Siri #Smartphones #cameras #NewCars #smarthouse making their lives "easier" but apparently more dependent.

@stux I find blockchain mostly interesting from a social perspective - the grifting, the scams, the detachment from reality while classifying anything not deluded as FUD. Technologically, it's not terribly new and not terribly advanced and its underlying technology has libertarian style inequality built in. It's a great example of "built-in ideology". AI, in the sense of the recent explosion of LLMs is indeed interesting but also surrounded by a shit-ton of smokescreens and constant exaggerations, fear-mongering as well as gratuitous downplaying of interesting results. Again, the nerdiest thing about these models is the sheer scale of the datasets and the amount of compute, power, energy, CO2 used up, the tech in itself is not that new, simply never applied before at this scale, by so many, in such absurd ways. While they are very distinct, they have similar trajectories in being relatively opaque to the technically uninitiated, promising questionable fast gains, seeming futuristic, being environmentally catastrophic and thus a breeding ground for all kind of ideological and social conflict while dragging technology into this.Which to me is super duper fascinating but has more to do with dystopia than anything.
