The "New Outlook" demands that when adding your Gmail account, you also give Microsoft a copy of all your email, contacts, and calendar data. The "Learn More" link confirms: "Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers."WOW. Good time to switch to @thunderbird, folks! #Privacy #Outlook #Email

@thunderbird @killyourfm I’m in disbelief. This is truly insane. Microsoft keeps walking away from the direction I want them to go. I just need two apps to release on Linux and I’m all set. I’m migrating one workflow, but my main app is not on Linux yet.

@killyourfm @thunderbird oopsWell now Microsoft has 12 GB of my emailsI used the built in apps because of live tiles and being able to see my calendar events when clicking on the taskbar clock. Can third-party apps integrate like that, or do I need to migrate back to GNOME/KDE for that?

@killyourfm @thunderbird hmm. I think the "new outlook" is nothing more than a shell that displays the web version of outlook. Since nothing is actually left on your local device, this is just a side effect of Microsoft's attempt to make everything cloud'y. Sure is convenient though, of course. 😂

@killyourfm I suppose the next step will be to offer some advanced features for free if you then migrate everything to a Microsoft Product, which would also be instantaneous. And, after a couple of years they will ask money for that, since nobody reads the fine print.

@killyourfm @thunderbird This is enough to push me to try Thunderbird. I tried adding my Outlook email but received an error, trying both IMAP and POP3. I later received an email from Microsoft advising me to create an app password for whatever I was trying to do that failed, because I have 2FA enabled. Hope this is useful to anyone reading this thread.

@killyourfm @thunderbird Wait; why are you adding Gmal access to Outlook if you don't want it to access Gmail?I'm at a bit of a loss as to how Outlook would be able to act as a client for Gmail without access to that data? I mean, that's sorta the of adding your Gmail account to Outlook (which is something I would never do, for just this reason).

@killyourfm I never put anything on a Google account that is important (the only Google account I have belongs to a partner). Giving the data to another vendor to scan simply lowers the value of that data to Google, which wouldn't bother me much.

I have questions about this post From @killyourfm about Microsoft wanting to sync your Gmail to their own cloud. Will Microsoft have access to these, meaning will your data be encrypted or will Microsoft be able to read and analyze it for purposes other than letting you have access? There are more questions. But we can start with that.https://layer8.space/users/killyourfm/statuses/111177548524347041

@killyourfm @thunderbird I can remember that there is a way to add an email accounts via imap/smtp without piping all the mails and contacts through MS Server. But it's hard not to overlook. Most of the intelligent feature of outlook needs some kind of processing on their server, that is the argument of MS. Not that i want to defend MS! Anyhow Google ist doing the same with all mails and contacts on their servers. In the end the stuff will be processed twice here.😉

@killyourfm @thunderbird I see the privacy concern. I don't see why it's not justified. Outlook is a Microsoft product. While it technically is an email client, it's optimized for a Microsoft Outlook email much like the iPhone email app is optimized for iCloud emails. Your Microsoft account can also be tied to either a Microsoft Outlook account, or a Gmail account. It makes sense that to use all features outlook has to offer, your content would need to be moved to Microsoft servers. 1/2

@killyourfm @thunderbird Seems like a bunch of pearl clutching to be upset that a cloud service provider wants access to your data stored by another cloud service provider.

@killyourfm @thunderbird nope. Mozilla isn't exactly my cup of tea. They try stuff like this (https://itsfoss.com/firefox-looking-glass-controversy/) and talk a lot about how they protect users privacy, like all companies do these days... Until we find out something different from what they say. I can't blame them, personal data seems to be the gold of these years.

@killyourfm @goebelmasse Den Erfindern des Computers werde ich den Lösungsweg „ach, bei dir tritt folgendes Problem auf, ja, dann installier doch stattdessen meine Lieblingssoftware“ absehbar niemals verzeihen.

@sapphireangel @arush @thunderbird Sorry to hear that, Keri. I'd like to believe those issues were ironed out when version 115 came out. Hopefully it's a better experience for your moving forward.

@killyourfm @thunderbird not only GMail account, it also applies to any IMAP account. Maybe they “need” it, but I definitely don’t want to let them train their AI with my e-mails. And then they say that the new Outlook is free 😀🖕🏻

@killyourfm @thunderbird Why anyone uses outlook, aside for a corporate environment where you have no choice (and the inevitable security disaster is not your problem!) I do not know.Likewise office 365 and other cloud stuff. Whenever I have to deal with that sort of thing, I am left thinking that if I did not have a choice I would not be using a computer.
