Here's how I'm finding ChatGPT useful in a weird way:1. I try to get it to write the description for a podcast episode. 2. It spits out hyperbolic vomit.3. I think, "WTF"?4. But then I actually write something better than I would have come up with on my own.I don't know what's going on. Somehow it inspires me or focuses my thinking to have to slog through its wrongness?Maybe as someone who works alone, I find it nice to have even a lousy writing partner.

@grammargirl maybe it's like the old joke about how the best way to get an answer on a technical question on a programming forum is to create a second account and post a wrong answer.

@grammargirl It has its uses. I like to prompt it to write things, then I have a bench mark to reach with my original writing. Though funny aside, more than a few times, because of how ChatGPT works, the prompts result in ChatGPT regurgitating my own writing back at me, even lifting quotes I got from clients in interviews for blog posts I have written for them.

@calsnoboarder Wow. It's definitely a concern. I'm running all my guest written posts through a plagiarism detector these days, which I never did before, because I worry they could end up with lifted materials like that if they're using AI on their drafts. I'm pretty sure they aren't, but it's a new risk.

@grammargirl I find I get different results if I ask for "short summary" and "short meta-description." It seems to know what I mean.

@grammargirl Seems related to the mechanism of how you can often solve your own problem when you seek someone's help and have to explain it to them.

@herzleid Ha! I've certainly had "conversations" with my husband where he doesn't say a word, and then I find the solution I need and say, "Thanks for the advice," and we laugh.

@grammargirl very old programming technique when you need to understand a problem - explain it to someone. If there’s no one present, a pet, pot plant or rubber duck will do nicely 🙂My cocker spaniels seem unimpressed, and are rarely directly helpful 😂👍

@grammargirl Back when I was slinging sandwiches and coffee at a local cafe, I found that just saying "You look like you want a ham and cheese on croissant" would always get an immediate decision from folks who had made it to the register and still looked adrift. They would respond with "oh that sounds great [thank you for not making me make another decision today]" or "No, I want a tuna on rye" it seems like whatever that effect is is at play here too.

@grammargirl I suspect - as a dog owner - that cats are far better for this than dogs. Cats have the right “I’m waiting to be impressed” attitude 🙂

@grammargirl Perhaps it’s making you put on your editor hat instead of the writer hat.
