Removing McCarthy would be historic. The U.S. House of Representatives has never successfully voted to remove the speaker before. If you're writing about it, don't confuse "historic" and "historical." Historic things are important. Historical things simply happened in the past.https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/articles/historic-versus-historical/

@grammargirl Indicting a former president for felonies was supposed to be historic...now it's par for the course. McCarthy's replacement should one exist, will face the same fate. Watch them reelect him to be Speaker.

@grammargirl I'm waiting to see who they try to put in his place - I think it would be hilarious if he ends up with the job again because they can't agree on anyone else.

@grammargirl Speaking for myself, I will use the word ‘Hysterical’ to describe both McCarthy’s election as Speaker and his removal from that position.

@grammargirl Is it not "an historical event"?

@grammargirl The funny thing is, in German (my mother tongue) there is no such distinction. There is only the word "historisch", and it can be translated as both "historic" and "historical". The meaning of the word becomes clear only with the wording of the sentence or sometimes only in context.

@grammargirl @GuyDudeman Speaking as a British person, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone here pronounce historic(al) with a leading vowelI have, however, heard some pompous people very carefully enunciating /ˈæn.hɪsˈtɒrɪk/ because they’ve learned that this is the ‘proper’ way to say itHotel is the other h- word that trips people up with zombie rules
