@Gatitasecsii It’s to warn someone what the content of the post is in case they don’t want to see it. A lot of people disable them though (like me) so they always show. It’s a courtesy for other users, basically. For Fediverse instances like this one, it’s probably best employed for use on posts with more extreme content, like violence, gore, death, etc.

@Gatitasecsii That’s… odd. I think your own posts may always be expanded (I could be wrong, I haven’t had the option turned off in years). It may vary due to mobile apps someone else is using (many have their own set of options), or it could just be a bug in Mastodon 4.2.0 that we recently upgraded to if you’re looking at it on the website. I saw the content warning on a post you made a bit ago on the app I use.

@Gatitasecsii Oooh, I think I may know the issue. Images also have another option when they’re added to a post called “Mark media as sensitive”. That may now need to be enabled for them to be hidden under a CW? I’ll have to try it out.You can also enable that option for all your pictures under Settings > Preferences > Other > “Always mark media as sensitive”, which is helpful for us staying federated with misskey.ion and some other instances.

@Nedrik @Gatitasecsii This. I kinda figured this was what you were trying to get at. This + tags are more effective at filtering stuff imo.

@slimshod @Gatitasecsii It looks like that’s what it probably is, I tested it out on the web interface and got this result once I changed my settings. It’s rather unintuitive… Not sure why pictures aren’t just part of the CW. :blobglare:

@Gatitasecsii There are two settings you can check for this in the web interface, both are in Settings > Preferences > Appearance.“Media Display” determines if pictures always show, only show if they’re not sensitive, or never show.“Always expand posts marked with content warnings” is to always hide or always expand posts that have content warnings. It looks like the first is set to always show sensitive media, but the second is set to hide posts with content warnings for you.

@Gatitasecsii Ignore CW, it's useless. You want the "show sensitive content" and "always mark as sensitive" options

@Gatitasecsii Tag it with gore and such tags. Baraag has the ability to filter out words and tags. If you tag it and mark it as sensitive content, you've done all you can. Everything else is up to people and their filters. They need to do something about it or deal.
