Remember that power outage that had #FRZ offline a while last week? Today I saw PG&E working on that corner and asked the lineman what they’re doing. He pointed at a pole and said “replacing the burned one”.What.I didn’t even know that was a failure mode.

@drwho @tek Fun fact: My mother used to work as a chemist for a creosote company (pissed her off as she's an environmentalist... watched her twitch for a few years) testing these things.Old poles are designed to be on fire... creosote is nasty shit largely TAR and heavy metals pressured into large trees to keep the rain and bugs out. They're really awful. A fire cooking one off like that isn't surprising.Poles are an environmental disaster.

@elfin @drwho Hah. I’m shocked, shocked! I learned about creosote (here pronounced like “chris-ode”) from my mom, who worked for a railroad which used it to preserve rail ties.I’ve seen people burning parts of poles and roasting hot dogs on it. Uh, no, don’t do that.
