This is a company that: 1. Entered a category where products traditionally lasted decades 2. Built a $17,000 product that was obsolete within a few years 3. Produced a self-congratulatory marketing video starring an Oscar winner about how environmentally friendly they are. https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/2/23900158/apple-watch-edition-gold-2015-obsolete-unsupported-beyonce

How many did they actually sell? I bet it was so few they decided to can the entire product line and I don't blame them. "Luxury watches" was not a market sector they needed to care about. They needed to appear to care about it at first to be taken seriously by people into watches, but clearly the product line is so successful there's no need for this to exist.

Estimates of there being at least 10,000 sold. But that's nothing.https://mjtsai.com/blog/2019/07/23/how-many-gold-apple-watches-were-sold/

Yeah if I was Apple I'd just tell these people to pound sand. They aren't poor, they knew the risks.https://appleworld.today/apple-watch-dominates-the-market-with-50-million-units-sold-in-2022/

@frameworkcomputer Someone should offer a $20,000 upgrade to turn these into forever watches.Link is for a Series 1 mod, surely something could be applied to first gen.https://www.instructables.com/Mechanical-Apple-Watch-From-Real-E-Waste-Apple-Wat/

@osma @frameworkcomputer In fairness the price of the product has nothing to do with the environmental impact. I don’t think the gold version pollutes more than any other smartwatch produced in 2015.

@anderspuck @osma @frameworkcomputer Interesting questions. But it turns out that gold pollutes much more. From a study about metal production in Australian "Production of gold had the highest impacts when considering the amount of metal produced and reflecting on the pollutant emissions released to extract gold."https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8115058/Quite often the factory is 1000 times more compared to iron (producing steel might reduce this)

@realn2s @anderspuck I would think it is relatively obvious that the carbon cost of a luxury product has little to do with the carbon cost of its materials, however good or bad the latter might be. Low production runs, high overheads, the lifestyle association, etc factor in.Expendable luxury products are particularly bad.If you were to argue that this applies to ALL smart watches, I wouldn't necessarily argue back. Ref mechanical conversion I linked.

@osma @realn2s I don't think smartwatches are primarily designed to tell the time, so I'm not sure a mechanical conversion is a solution for most people.

@anderspuck I don't think a golden Apple Watch that Karl Lagerfeld wears without even doing the setup for it is a solution for most people, either. And I'm absolutely dead certain it is not primarily designed to do anything but project exclusivity. Which makes a unique, hand-made conversion a perfect solution for it!@realn2s

@osma @realn2s That's a good point. The gold Apple Watch was a braindead idea, and for the purpose it served, a mechanical conversion might be just as good. Or they can just use it as a bracelet. It doesn't have to serve any practical purpose at all.

@anderspuck @osma @realn2s what signals status better than a golden watch?A disposable golden watch.

@anderspuck @osma @frameworkcomputer Anders its not so much the gold itself, but I would expect that they had to do a completely separate production line for those gold casings vs the std ones which I doubt was cheap or env friendly

@anderspuck @osma @realn2s And then Withings do a whole line of "mechanical" smartwatches and you only need to charge them once a month... https://www.withings.com/it/en/watches
