When "normal" (non-NAS types) hear someone saying, "right" at the end of what they're saying, what do you think is the effect?

@jessecoynelson I answered wrong. It adds authority to normies.

@jessecoynelson it lets them know they’re talking to someone safe in their same milieu

@jessecoynelson I'm guessing it's annoying to a large percentage of people -- but who knows?"You know" is partly tied to one's relationship to the listener. If it's information I think you should be familiar with, then maybe I'll say it -- you know? I think a good strategy is to set the dynamic up front and get clear about what I know vs. what they know before talking, and then the language takes care of itself. Is it just a bad habit, or is there something deeper behind it.

@pjbrunet The extreme "you know" case is when it almost becomes the equivalent of "uh," used as a filler of silence. I've heard it used in that way.

@jessecoynelson It's contagious. I'm mostly cured of that one.Writing really helps me to tame those things.I'm on board with Adam and John calling them out. Can't let that shit slip in undetected.

@pjbrunet In the early 2000's, I worked on some audio editing project, where the "you know's" became painfully obvious to me, editing them out of audio... 🤣

@jessecoynelson It’s a sales technique. Like asking yes questions.

@MartinDeLaToot @jessecoynelson I supposeit may have started as a "technique" somewhere with someone, but it seem like it has now infected the general populace. Seems like it started out as "I know, right?!" and now has contracted down and/or evolved to a unconscious seeking of affirmation. Phooey. I call it PIOS - Persistant Interrogatory Overuse Syndrome.

@jessecoynelson @DublDubya if you seriously put more thought into this than your response just then, I have bad news for you.
