I'm thinking about the new #AI tools that convert your voice into a real-sounding version of you speaking in another language, and how Spotify is using them to make foreign versions of podcast such as "Armchair Expert."Those podcasts have guests. I wonder how guests are going to feel about being translated that way. I bet most won't care or will think it is cool, but I can imagine some people objecting.I wonder how they will handle that.#podcasting

@grammargirl I would want to know more about the quality of these translations. Has AI improved the quality of machine translation to make it indescernable from human translation or interpretation?

@tiredaidworker I've heard one person say they are amazingly good and another person say they are bad. Since I'm not fluent in any language other than English, I can't test it myself.I'm sure it depends on which tool you use, and I'm sure they will get better.

@grammargirl How good are tye translations? Colloquialisms translated word for word often make no sense.

Another thing is that not everything works as a direct translation. My podcast typically wouldn't work, for example, because I'm explaining words that need to be kept in English. One of my friends who is a linguist was a guest on "Armchair Expert." It wouldn't work to translate her interview. Do you think they will be sophisticated enough to filter out those episodes?

@grammargirl This reminds me about the fact that “Gobi Desert” is basically “desert desert.” And English is full of borrowed words and phrases. How deep do you translate? Is AI sophisticated enough to know the nuances?

@grammargirl initially no. In time however (months? Years? Decades?) AI will improve but it will never replace human content creation.

@grammargirl as a former interpreter, I have mixed feelings and certainly biased skepticism of AI translation, but we are also flawed and make mistakes, so at the same time I am impressed with (jealous of?) how much AI has advanced the quality of its written outputs in English. I haven't spent much time looking into how good AI is in, say, Japanese or Tagalog, but I have read critiques that its quality is not as good in some languages because there isn't as much variety for it to learn from.

@grammargirl I wonder how it's even legal to use someone's voice to produce content in a foreign language without their consent. I imagine that Spotify will use their terms and conditions to make people accept it, but as you point out—what about the guests?

@grammargirl perhaps woth enough exposure to formats like your podcast or to linguists explaining foreign words in English, or vice versa, AI could learn to replicate that.

It looks like maybe they are only translating a subset of episodes, so maybe they will filter out things like my linguist friend's episode. Here's a writing lesson though: The press release is unclear. It says:"for a select number of catalog episodes and future episode releases."Does "for a select number of" apply to just catalog episodes or future episodes too? If it's only catalog episodes, to be clear, it should say, "for future episode releases and a select number of catalog episodes."

@tiredaidworker Yes, I think at some point in the future it will be possible for AI to identify the words that need to stay in the original language.

@grammargirl I just realized that my voice is on one episode of a Spanish-language podcast. I don't want my voice being automatically translated into English. I'm a translator. Imagine how it'll sound to potential clients when the machine makes mistakes, but makes them with my voice. That's not OK.

@coffeenlanguage @grammargirl Did you see the test I posted today where I had an AI app analyze a video of me speaking Spanish and dub it into my native US English? There are plenty of problems. First, though I selected "American English," I sound like a Spaniard doing a bad impersonation of Trevor Noah. And the register is way too formal even though I was using colloquial Spanish. Plus, since Spanish takes more syllables to say things, it *added things I never said* to pad out the wording.

@grammargirl I’ve seen amazing results from Japanese to English in my Mastodon client: is orders of magnitude better than the translations made by Google. There’s no doubt that much will be lost, but at least you’ll get to listen to something that wouldn’t be available at all otherwise. Depending on the stats the creator may be able to create special translations for audiences in other languages.
