a recurring daydream of mine is to have like a "what is fandom?" starter kit that's just automatically given to anyone who joins a fandom, or trash-talks a fandom, or wants to interact with the concept of fandom in any way so people actually have a sense of what's up and won't say stuff that's confused at best and outright lies at worst with as much fequency.

I dunno what I'd put in it, but definitely an explanation that the modern concept of fandom comes from the science fiction fandom, it is passion-driven organization and creative expression around a specific area of interest. It does not require you to be a soldier for a particular franchise or creator. It does not require you to consume everything with a particular brand. If corporations like what you're doing, then... well, I don't wanna say it's not fandom, but you're missing out on much of the fun of fandom.

@Owlor There's a lot of people that seem dedicated to making fandom less fun overall for people..

One common type of fan expression is to pretend that the events of a story really happened in some reality and theorize about it. This is a game, in fact, the classic sherlock holmes fandom refers to it as "the great game". The characters are tools used by an author to tell a story, and if things get too heated, you should really step back and remember this fact 😓
