All I want as a web developer is to link to an address / lat±lng and for the users 🌎 map service of choice (#OpenStreetMap, #Apple maps, #GoogleMaps, whatever) to open without being dependant upon Google. It's 2023 and even darling of the "free and open web", #Firefox doesn't support geo:// #indieweb

@devolute I mean this seriously.. but this might be an oppertunity for a really great project. Especially if you generalize, why dont you do it?Im thinking a service that allows for general service preference of users and automatically linking... would work like this:All links for a map would point to the URL of this service with a special format... wouldnt just be maps, can be anything tha has the nature of a universal resource that can be consumed by a number of services... like music with spotify, pandora, etc all as possible endpoints right. Then if a user goes to the link who has never signed up or use the service it just automatically transfers them to a default transparently, so it looks no different than it does now. However anyone can sign up for an account there and select their prefered service for various types of links.. this gives you a login and a cookie so its automatic... now when you click those same links you transparently get forwarded to the service of your choice. What i love here is 1) its easy to do 2) it solves your problem for the whole net if people use it and adopt it 3) even if no one adopts it it still will accomplishw hat you want for your own websites so day one you get what you want out of the box on sites you author.#floss #foss #oss #OpenWeb

@freemo Yeah, I think what I really want is for browser manufacturers to implement this 13yr old proposal: https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5870.html#section-6.2 (thanks, @ramsey)

@devolute That would be great.. but maybe if you build your own solution and replicate this standard it might get them to do it?@ramsey

@freemo @devolute The easier way to get them to adopt it would probably be to submit patches to Firefox, WebKit, and Chromium, implementing it in the browsers. Then again, it’s more about how the OS itself handles that URI scheme, so maybe it’s on the OS developers to implement this?

@freemo @devolute I just tried this on macOS, and neither Safari, Firefox, or Edge will do anything with the `geo:` schema. However, check out what I’m prompted for on iOS.The Go Map!! app has registered the `geo:` scheme with the OS, so when you click on any `geo:` link, you can open it in that app. So, this is essentially what has to happen: an app that knows how to handle `geo:` needs to register itself with the OS as handling that scheme.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geo_URI_scheme
