@furgar Wow! Ehh, hmm, I would say they are not really a "thing" that has value, but more a way of interacting with other "things" that do have value. So they register differently in our consciousness.

@furgar Interesting. Never thought about it but now that I do I can't recall any dream when I've ever used a phone or laptop and I am using one or both more than 12 hours a day.

@furgar Probably because it's a left brain activity. The same reason why you don't read books in your dreams.

@GreenZeta @furgar I think it's because it's a medium of communication. In dreams I just know things and I just communicate information. The act of ingesting that knowledge or communicating that information is seldom included because it is not relevant to the story being generated. Dreams are like woke movie scripts.Being male, I wonder if women have the same experience, given that the act communication itself is often the most relevant part of their stories.

@furgar my dreams mostly feature either naked women or me fighting hordes of alien monsters, neither of which I stare at 12 hours a day. Then again, I don't stare at my phone for that long either.

@furgar no, they are usually much more scary. And sometimes I am the monster and I murder people and devour their flesh. Once I had a dream where I was a giant centipede terrorising the city.

@Meachamus_Prime @GreenZeta @furgar @cmurda It's not impossible, some writers have claimed to write something they read in dreams. I believe it's rare because dreams don't come out of nowhere, our brains have to "produce" and "direct" them, and they cheat themselves out of creating difficult content by hiding it or diverting focus elsewhere. A sort of cowardly retreat.

@newt @furgarMy dreams are much more pedestrian than yours 😆I had a dream with a phone in it, actually the whole dream was about a phone — I've been customizing it, basically what I've been doing a lot at the time, only the customizations were a lot weirder. But I did miss some of them when I woke up 🤣I had weirder dreams when I've been younger, like in one of them I lived in a village that was inhabited by drowned people, but the didn't feel obliged to tell them that. They did discover that some other way eventually and everything turned into a shitshow compared to the peaceful life they had before. In another dream I could jump really high, like I could jump on top of a 20 story building. But it required concentration and I wasn't always sure that it would work — the worst part is that I've been followed the entire time, hiding inside buildings wasn't an option at they would've still tracked me eventually and staying outside was safer as at least I could always jump, but as I wasn't always sure in this ability, I've been extremely nervous the entire time.Something like that — nothing too violent or bloody.

@skypage @furgar Same. If I remember anything, it's usually one still image and a general plot. For whatever reason, if I eat tropical-flavored whey powder I remember more of my dream.I've only ever had one first-person dream (that I remembered when I woke) in my life.It was extremely uncomfortable and I hated it. I like my dreamless sleep, thank you very much. I already live in one Hell, I don't need more of it every 24hrs.

@cmurda @furgar It is! I have had to read things in my dreams often and I have trouble concentrating on the sentence. A long time ago I watched a documentary about lucid dreaming called Waking Life and one interviewee said you can tell you’re in a dream if the words look like scribbles, or change when you look away. In the few times I could be lucid or at least remember what the words looked like, it was true!As for phones, I think I have used computers and phones and video games in dreams. I bet it is less common to see them in your dreams for people who grew up without many phones and computers and video games. Pic related, some DALL-E Mini images of Richard Stallman presenting the new iPhone. Really bad AI art reminds me of my dreams. Sometimes when you wake up in the middle of one, you can remember that the imagery was really wacky in the same way.

@eriner @furgar If your dreams are bad, take up learning to lucid dream. No bad dreams when you control them as an oneironaut. Outside of a sleep disorder, we all dream whether we remember them or not outside of a sleep disorder that disrupts REM sleep. Interesting that a particular whey powder would increase your dream recall; wonder if there's something that affects choline levels in it or something.https://www.sciencealert.com/there-s-a-reliable-method-for-triggering-lucid-dreams-study-shows

@skypage @furgar no idea about the whey. I for sure dream, I just only remember a still image and a vague plot when I wake if I remember anything at all. There is no way I could lucid dream. I’ve only ever had a “first person” dream once in my life, and like I said I usually don’t remember shit about to dream, lol. I recall dreams so rarely (once a month, maybe) that I find dreaming off-putting and disturbing. If I could take a magic pill and never remember my dreams ever again, I’d do it.

@eriner @furgar That's sad, considering lucid dreaming is the original VR with way more cool things that are possible in it. I'd love to be able to lucid dream, but the only times I've become aware of the dream while in one I got too excited and woke myself up. Lucid dreaming doesn't need to be first person, so I don't see why preferring something third person would be an issue.

@eriner @furgar If you're in control of the dream, that pattern wouldn't need to be continued. Unless you have some motivations most people don't? 😉
