increase in household mold is from making houses too tight, trying to insulate too much.I wonder how much of our current IQ loss is due to these environmental factors

@sickburnbro this would be fixed with the ray peat diet.

no, it wouldn't. this is enviromental; you need to do mold tests in the home, ensure you have enough airflow and then also test for people that are sick.A peat diet will probably make you less susceptible to begin with, but a high enough mold level would still drain you

How can you test for mold? Where are these drugs available?

@sickburnbro reminder to clean out your air conditioner/filter, air out your house and let some sun in.

for environment, yes familyhandyman.com/list/best-mold-test-kits/for you .. the best way I know of is bloodwork, but that's usually just going to be clues. I think the paper had an interesting method; Saccharomyces boulardii - and the competition for the biome space caused a phisological reaction.

Yeah. I was just thinking with this mold thing, how it is a second order effect. Houses were made way way tighter, which means that you don't get nearly as much air circulation, which is a huge change. Indoor A/C is also a huge change and one that we understand all the implications of extremely poorly. We've seen how badly masks protect against airborn infectious particles, and we know how hospitals are breeding grounds for infections even with them cleaning things quite diligently.

Most of our degradation is environmental, however one must not forget the epigenetic factor and the fact that epigenetic expressions are inheritable. So you can fuck up your kid with toxins, and in the same process fuck up your bloodline because he'll pass this shit along. It's odd because it's super easy to fuck it up, but is a generational endeavour to unfuck it

I work in building conservation and there's a consensus that making pre-1900 buildings air tight is a great way to fuck them up. However I've increasingly realised that that applies just as much to modern buildings.

@NitroDubs @sickburnbro I expect that the reduced airflow will make radon stick around longer inside of building envelopes.

there are a ton of problems with modern buildings, and some of it is that the attempt for greater insulation decreases the room for mistakes, and then on top of that a lot of new materials are used and we don't know well how they age - and a lot of them have turned out to be "poorly" : as an example polybutylene pipes: polybutylene.com/poly.html

Better yet are the time bombs which only manifest down the line. Like EE2 and fertility. If Gen 0 is blasted with a dose of EE2, subsequent generations have a continuous drop in fertility each generation despite themselves never being exposed.

that seems a bit hyperbolic; what is the route to causing fertility disuption? What I've heard that makes sense is that stuff like Ethinylestradiol are extremely stable and break down very slowly. Which is a problem, but not an unsolvable one.

Insulation also needs to cover a surface in its entirety or you'll end up with thermal bridges, which is an excellent way to encourage mould. And as you say, we have no idea what the long term performance will be for new materials. The use of cement in older buildings though, such as mortars, often damaged the historic fabric as cement is generally much harder and hence disrupted the structure's moisture permeability. When it was first introduced though no one had any idea, so we'll have to see what lessons we learn now...

yeah, the work to properly insulate is almost as much as to sound proof. And you can't just spray foam and pray
