Do you have a proud editing or proofreading moment?Mine is that I once caught an error in Chinese. I don’t even know Chinese, but I was moving around some translated words and noticed characters in a common pattern had changed.

@grammargirl Not editing, but I caught a typo in a dedication that was written in ancient Greek. It was corrected in later editions.I wish I had an editing story that good! Usually, I just catch 'pore' vs 'pour' and sometimes I get 'effect' vs 'affect' right the first time!

@grammargirl Serious money on the line when I determine the source of the printed error by examining the type in hexadecimal. A major victory for the away team! #typography #newspaper

@grammargirlAnother "not editing" response, but in a similar vein: during a college bowl-style competition in high school I gave the correct result for a short FORTRAN program (a language I'd never used nor even seen before) and then defended it successfully when the quizmaster said I was wrong (the answer on his page was actually in error).

@grammargirl Not quite a “stop the presses!” moment but it was fixed pretty quickly for 1987.

@grammargirl my first job out of grad school was as a tech writer for a scientific consulting company. My boss sent me a document with the word "Public" in the title except it was missing one crucial letter. Guess the letter for 1000 Webster points

@grammargirl When I worked in a Canadian government employment office sending folk off to jobs, our job notices that we put up on the job boards were automatically translated into French. I discovered one translation that asked for workers with experience hanging blind people up vertically. The job call was actually for vertical blind hangers.

@grammargirl I was loaned out to a small oil and gas tech firm to write a user manual for a new product. All I had were notes scrawled by electrical engineers and a protype I could push buttons on to see what happened. 😂The engineers knew I was unfamiliar with their field but I impressed them with good questions nonetheless: usually, this was simply me identifying that they failed to use any verbs that might hint what Part A was doing with Part B. Deciphering grammar FTW! 😀

@grammargirl Catching this error... eventually... on the final day before we shipped the magazine to the printer.

@likelyjanlukas Good job! This gave me a shiver remembering the time I was hired to write a user manual for biotech product I had never used, and the company wouldn't let me ask any of the technical people for clarifications because they were "too busy." I absolutely knew I was writing a manual that would leave users frustrated. I never took another project from that client even though they paid especially well. It was just too horrible.

@grammargirl Yeah. I looked at it at least three times on separate editorial rounds and didn't see it. I keep it on my bulletin board as a constant reminder not to get lazy.

@grammargirl Oh, that would be terrible! I'm sorry. ☹️Clarifications are SO critical! Indeed, though it amused me to just push buttons and see what happened, engineers observing me doing that flagged a big design problem: I was leaning my hand against a critical (delicate) component to reach a keypad. It never occured to the designers that users might do this because it was obvious to them that this should NOT be done. But, definitely not obvious to the rest of us! 😬
