Therefor, catgirls were (and still are) used in manga/anime to visualize a 'naughty person' who's up to no good.So, different background, different genus, different cultural origins. Technically as a Yokai they are their own thing but you could say they're closer to furries than catgirls due to their base form and ability to act human (intelligence, speech) while being a fox.
