I may be in the minority here, but I don't like the trend of having episode art that's different for every podcast episode — at least not when the images have no recognizable connection to the brand. Maybe it's just the podcast player I use, but now, when I'm looking at the list of new episodes from shows I subscribe to, I can't even tell which show they're from. They've lost all branding.#podcasting

@grammargirl I agree. I also agree as a podcast editor who's slightly lazy and doesn't want to have to come up with even more assets for every episode. :) The one place it looks good is on a podcast's website where episodes stand out from each other.

@grammargirl No no, I agree completely. I know when I publish episodes, I individualise cover art for episodes in the web view, but keep it constant in the RSS feed, for exactly this reason. So people finding an episode by google on the show website, or who subscribed by email or something, get to see the covert art (usually a nice photo of the person I'm interviewing). But in your podcasting app, where my episodes are mixed up with all your other subscriptions, you see the show logo.

@uastronomer That seems like a smart way to do it.I have individual episode art that goes everywhere, but it has strong branding so you can still tell it's my show. It just replaces the show name with the episode number, which I actually think is useful if you're looking for a specific episode (which people are doing for my show because the topics are evergreen).

@grammargirl which player do you use? I don't think mine does this.

@grammargirl Absolutely no way. Maybe if there's recognizable branding with a very small seasonal tweak? I really rely on shape & color schemes to easily pick out one podcast from the others, and if those change a lot it's much more effort for me to find them.Maybe this fits in with the trend I sometimes hear of referring to a single audio recording as a "podcast", where I would consider it an "episode in a podcast" or, if disconnected from a podcast series, a "recording". Is the episode its own creative work, to be branded independently of everything else, or is it one issue in a larger volume of work (to borrow magazine publishing lingo)?

@grammargirl I haven't had a podcast player that shows the individual episode art for ages. Sometimes, I don't even get the notes.I tend to listen to podcasts when commuting or when walking the dog. I just have them queued up on the app and they either feed to the car audio or a little set of headphones.I believe this is asynchronous media consumption.

@grammargirl How do people have time to do that? Editing and prepping takes enough time as it is.

@grammargirl Totally agree with this. Almost no podcast is big enough to get cute with branding like that.

@grammargirl I like that approach. I think it's what I would do, if I had the budget to have it done properly.

@danciruli Interesting. I use one of the smaller podcast players. As I look around, I see some other players have this problem and others don't. It's actually reason enough for me to switch.

@DrInterpreter I use a very simple template where I just drop in the episode number, and others that I see seem to be stock art. I'm sure at least a few people put a lot of effort into it though.

@grammargirl For what it's worth, I use Pocketcasts (for which I paid like $5 as a one time fee a few years ago).

@grammargirl this is why I use a template. There are recognizable features so you know it’s my podcast.
