OK, based on these two photos it looks like my zoom is fouled up. Is it worth trying to clean/fix it, or just get a new one? (It's 10 years old)Nikon D5200 with 28-75 zoom (flare on lights) vs 35mm fast prime (no flare) https://photos.app.goo.gl/ufsmkqJFLSo45qtE8@jeffcarlson @KingShawn council of photographers unite

@MikeTRose @KingShawn You've cleaned the front and back lens elements, yes? And is it happening in other situations or just then? I wonder if that could be temporary condensation if the outside/inside temps were very different. And is that the f/2.8? That's a pricey lens, so I'd look into repairing it, although I've never had a lens repair done.

@jeffcarlson @KingShawn I'll check the aperture — yes it's been cleaned but I'll clean it again! It had been inside for hours so I don't think it's a temp change issue. I worry there may be permanent condensation on an internal surface.Yes, it happens in other circumstances too. :(

@MikeTRose @jeffcarlson Hard to diagnose this from afar but Jeff is pointing you in the right direction - for now. :)Jeff asked if the “Nikon 28-75mm zoom” lens with the flare is a f2.8 - the pricey one :) ? I’m confused because info on the photo says you’re shooting at 24mm and 1/30s (which is way too slow unless you’re shooting on a tripod and why the shots are blurry). One solution is physical - just don’t include the ugly fluorescent lights in the shot.1/x

@MikeTRose @jeffcarlson Does that lens do this whenever you shoot this kind of lighting? Any chance you can beg/borrow/rent the same lens to contrast and compare? Or use the offending lens on a different camera?2/2

@KingShawn @jeffcarlson I could try to borrow a comparison lens, but this is a relatively recent development as far as I can tell — the zoom didn’t used to have this issue. (That’s also why I included the comparison shot from the same angle using the 35mm prime lens.)

@KingShawn @jeffcarlson OK so I was *firmly* incorrect about the specs of the lens. Nikon DX AF-S Nikon 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G — $69 used from Adorama.

@MikeTRose @jeffcarlson LOL Yeah - I thought you might be. It’s why I asked for clarification. :)That’s the kit lens for that camera. It’s…adequate. Frankly, I’d say bin it (it *IS* 10 years old, after all) and buy a new one. Treat yourself. :)

@MikeTRose @jeffcarlson Your camera is kinda old as well. Are you in the market for a new one? Because that might dictate the kind of lens I’d recommend you buy.

@MikeTRose @jeffcarlson Understood. A relatively inexpensive new lens would be best (sorry Jeff - he’s not getting a new mirrorless :) ).You’ll want an all purpose lens, unless there are *specific* subjects you more frequently shoot. Check out:AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5 – 5.6G ED VR II (27-300mm equivalent on your camera)AF-S DX 18-105mm F3.5-5.6G ED VRAF-S DX 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR LensAll are decent and reasonably priced beginner lenses for your Nikon.

@KingShawn @jeffcarlson @MikeTRose Used to go to Nikon House at Rockefeller Center in NYC where every Nikon camera, lens, & accessory was available to see & try with no purchase option to cloud your mind. Talk about Gear Acquisition Syndrome, it ran rampant there. Now only B&H Photo offers the opportunity to try new cameras & lenses, but unlike Nikon House there’s an expectation that you’ll want to buy what you’re playing with 🙂
