One thing that I don't like about Mastodon is that I can't edit the replies to my post. So, if someone replies to something I said with a non sequitur, the only way I can remove it is by blocking the replier. It'd be nice to remove the reply without blocking the replier.

@evan Its functionally not possible because you cant control the other server... its a mesh network afterall and the whole point is no one has the power to silence another.Even if you block someone they can still leave replies to your posts (assuming you dont have authorized fetch, but then your posts arent public)

@freemo @evanNot only that, but replies are posts, part of another person's timeline. If someone is posting non-sequitors though, you should use the report button, see if server mods will do something about it. I know there have actually been server blocks for that, simply because it's a way for people from the Neo-Nazi servers to be disruptive.

@raccoon Wait what!? You think a server should be reported and blocking because someone in the comments had a tangential but otherwise polite response? Just because some neo-nazis did that before? That sounds bonkers... thats like saying cake is evil cause Hitler liked cake.... just no.@evan

@evan even blocking doesn't remove the reply, it just makes it so they can't reply again. So you have a reply that you don't like/agree with that you can't see, but is still there for everyone else to see. Removing replies is definitely needed.I'm tired of basically endorsing people that reply just for the sake of arguing.

@BeAware Actually you can continue to reply once your blocked assuming authorized fetch isnt used.. and assuming your local server doesnt stop you somehow. There are different types of blocked but the regular block that doesnt use auth-fetch is meant to be invisible to the other server, the server and the person dont know their blocked. So you can continue to reply once blocked and the replies will show. I know because I do it all the time when i dont realized im blocked and only find out im blocked later.@evan

@raccoon @freemo I don't care if someone's reply lives in their own timeline; I just don't want it in the list of replies hosted on my server.

@evan If you are the moderator you can delete them off of your server specifically if you wish...But you realize someone going to your post from another server will still see it... it will only disapear for the users who are viewing it from your server itself (since youve deleted it only from your local server).@raccoon

@evan Your server has a sort of "virtual" account for the foreign user who made the post... its their "federated" account but its the cache your local server has of it... but you can moderate it like a local account,a nd go in and delete posts or whatever you want..When you do this your basically just making it so people with accounts on your server will never see the reply, but as i said even if you do this someone from another server looking at your thread will still see the reply because they federate with the other server too and fetched it from that server not yours.@raccoon

@freemo @evanYou misunderstand. Neo-Nazi servers were blocked because admins investigated them. Individual users got warnings and blocks for doing that from otherwise innocuous servers.

@freemo @evanWhich is why I'm telling you to report it, if you think it's either spam or purposeful disruption. Give the mods of both servers an opportunity to look that over and decide if something should be done. For all you know, it's some sort of automated spam account that's slipped beneath the radar.

@raccoon Ahh ok.. it is good to hear a user doign that on a non-nazi server didnt cost the whole server to get blocked... that is much better. That said any instance who would block a user from an entire instance simply for making polite comments that happened to engage a related but somewhat tangential topic.. that sounds like it would be a VERY toxic instance and not the kind of behavior anyone should be ok with, or encourage by reporting.@evan

@raccoon If you think its spam... sure... but if someone is making a comment that is a tangent but otherwise has some minor relationship to the topic, then that seems excessive to me.@evan

@raccoon Thats fair then, if your only concern here is bots, and the post seems like it might be spam, and not just "off topic".. and you bother to ask them "hey are you a person"... and all that, then i think reporting for spam is fine, and a good thing (id do the same). My issue was it sounded like you'd report an account simply for making a non sequitur comment in and of itself... That seemed wrong.@evan

@freemo @evanI would.By reporting it you are bringing it to the attention of the moderation team, that someone is making these non-sequitur comments, giving them a heads up that they should go look at this person's activity.

@raccoon I know you have good intentions, so I hope you dont take this the wrong way but.... I'd have to say that you are a bad actor here.Making non-sequitor comments, unless it is suspicious of spam in some way, is not something any moderator should care about, or have their time wasted. As a moderator myself I can say that report spam is not generally welcome where people report others for non-nonsensical reasons like this. It is in no way something that is actionable and wastes times. Also many moderators simply block when they get enough reports since they cant handle the volume and this can lead to a lot of blocks that are completely unjustified and abusive. Its very specific to the circumstances... If someone posts about the super bowl and then someone makes a comment about snow tires that seems completely unrelated to the OP with a link to a snow tire store, then yea, thats suspicious... But if someone makes a comment about something that seems somewhat tangential but has some reasoning as to why the OP post might have spurred the tangential conversation, then no, you would be the bad actor to make this report. When I reply to something I am posting to **my** server, not yours, reporting me because I made a post on my own server about your post because it isnt "on topic" enough is just toxic behavior. If you want a free services that is well moderated, you have to remember moderators arent paid.. when you waste our time with reports on non-sense you make the network unmanagable.. this isnt good for the server or our communities.@evan

@freemo @evan I will consider what you have said, because I see your point. All I am saying is, on Tech Hub, I would rather people click the report button, because I would rather look at reports that didn't need to be made than find weeks of mildly disruptive activity from a troll account I'd never seen, and I would rather have a chance to go send a PM to someone who isn't interacting well for whatever reason.Different styles I guess.

@evan Coulda swore I made this post already.. but it appears my post was not a reply and i made it as a top level post accidentally. Anyway here it is again:If you are the moderator you can delete them off of your server specifically if you wish...But you realize someone going to your post from another server will still see it... it will only disapear for the users who are viewing it from your server itself (since youve deleted it only from your local server).

@raccoon I think that is great, and you as a moderator having that style and welcoming it is good... If someone knows you want that, and that you are responsible enough to not take a report as a sign of suspicion (without research) then yea I think thats a great policy. But i dont think that reflects the mentality of other servers... The vast majority of server moderators would not see a reply that is off topic as anything that even hints at trolling. We are here to encourage conversation, not make people scared to talk politely... I would be quite worried about being a part of any server that is going to investigate me simply because i made a comment that deviated past the subject of the original post in some way... having users living in fear of such a minor misstep or trying to control their behavior in a way that discourages that is unhealthy.@evan

@freemo @evanOh, of course, I'm not even saying every weird thing should be reported, I'd just rather people err on the side of letting the mod-team know what's up.

@raccoon As a general principle on that I agree. If something seems like genuinely suspicious activity, even if you arent sure, then yea, by all means report it.All I'm saying is someone being off topic a bit in their reply shouldnt be anything setting off red flags in most cases... thats my only point. Its hardly rude or suspicious for a conversation to expand into new areas, nor should it be discouraged.@evan
