Also, can you imagine going into the past and trying to blend in with ancient civilisations on earth alone so that we can explore them... much less on other planets? You will stick out like a sore thumb. I think there is a good reason that we don't really show things like this in the series and I think that is okay. The Doctor doesn't have to be disabled.
