INCOMING THREAD 🚨🚨🚨1/I'd like to do a thread on a controversial topic inside the conservative circle of discussion. No worries, it's not about vaccines, I promise. Today, I would like to talk about the topic of US foreign aid#ukraineQV

/I would like to begin the thread with an anecdote. I was once having a discussion with a close friend of mine. We were talking about how expensive college was in this country. This was like maybe 7-8 years ago. We agreed that free college was a fantasy and could never happen. However, We disagreed on the reasoning.

/When I asked her why she thought it was out of reach, she said "because we send too much foreign aid to Israel". My jaw was agape. Not because of the anti-israel trope. She was always a bit of a "muh the zionists are taking over!" conspiracy theorist. But she actually thought we gave enough aid to israel to cover college tuition for the entire country.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhckuhUxcgA

/"it's true! look it up!" she says. "We give them 5 million dollars per day!" I didn't bother looking it up. I just brought up the math immediately. "ok. 5 million per day. in a year, that's about 1.8 billion". There are roughly 20 million students in this country. Let's say we stop israeli aid completely and gave that money directly to the students. without even factoring gov't bureaucracy and wastefulness, each student would get 91 dollars for their tuition.

/Fast forward to today. I hear the same argument from supposed conservatives about the aid currently being sent to ukraine that could have been used to solve world hunger, fix every democrat shithole in america, and turn public schools that have been failing for decades in to rhodes scholar factories. This argument is of course, even more ridiculous than my friends israeli aid one. I will show you why

/First, I want to at least start with one point of reference. How much exactly have we given to ukraine? The number changes every time someone complains about it. I've heard anywhere from 70-150 billion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf7uJDhVZIE

/So I put on my trusty research hat and scoured the internet a bit for the exact number. I came up with this source. Feel free to contest it if you feel it's not correct. It puts the number at 76 billionhttps://www.cfr.org/article/how-much-aid-has-us-sent-ukraine-here-are-six-charts#

/"OMGERSH! 76 BILLION DOLLARS! UNIMAGINABLE! UNPRECEDENTED! THAT'LL SURELY BANKRUPT US RIGHT?!" Not quite. The US has been generous with foreign aid for a while. https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamandrzejewski/2021/08/04/new-report-nearly-300-billion-in-foreign-aid-spent-by-us-government/?sh=271f88f64374

/Also, the way these people screech, you would think we were sending ukraine pallets of cash in the middle of the night like the obummer administration did with Iran. If you go back to the chart, you can see that a majority of this aid is military and weapons related.

/So no, this money couldn't have been allocated to solve world hunger unless human beings have discovered a way to eat tanks and m-16's. And as much as we'd all like the military to go to democrat shitholes and start cleaning up the crime, I'm pretty sure there's something in the constitution against that.

/Then comes to the philosophical question of "why"? Ok, even if the amount wasn't as astronomical as we thought it was, why should we waste any money helping the ukrainians repel the russians? What do we get out of this arrangement? We should just take care of ourselves and let those guys fight amongst themselves right?https://tenor.com/8Zie.gif

/Those who want america to take a page out of the north korean handbook and become a hermit kingdom are delusional. The fact is, we got to where we are today by forming alliances and making friends. Our nato allies along with us keep bad actors at bay and keep the general order of things flowing.

/One of the principal laws of power tells us that the world is dangerous and enemies are everywhere. people will naturally inclinate towards building a fortress around themselves for protection. However, isolation exposes you to even more dangers than it protects you from. Cutting yourself off from vital resources, friendships, and information. It is better to interact among people, form alliances, and mingle.

/Completing the monumental task of unifying all the warring nations of china involved not only successful military campaigns, but also alliances with the enemies of those warring nations. As Qin proceeded with the unification, he made multiple allies along the way to help him crush any opposition and also to give him information of oncoming attacks to his army

/Qin shi huang was able to accomplish what hadn't been able to be done for 1000+ years. He went on to phase out many archaic systems in his empire and standardized trade, communication, currency, and language. However, the system he had used to rise to power and accomplish the unification, slowly fell by the wayside

/The emperor also grew very mistrustful of everyone surrounding him. He had a large palace built that consisted of 270 pavillions. There were thousands of rooms and he also built secret underground passageways in between these rooms. He spent his last days avoiding his subjects as much as possible save for a small circle. It is also rumored that he was searching for a fabled elixir of immortality. Whenever he left the palace, he traveled in disguise.

/"So...what the heck is the point of this story DROP?"This great nation of the United States got to where it is today by being the first version of Qin shi Huang. Although obviously not as ruthless but through having the right alliances and helping the right nations take down bad actors and enemies. We have never been a hermit kingdom. Helping allies fight off a russian invasion whether monetarily or with weapons pays us back 10 fold and is what we have always been about.

/So at the end of the day, try not to be shocked when most GOP politicians vote to send more aid to ukraine. It's not because they are "muh RINOS", it's just a no brainer to do so. We've given much more to other nations to preserve alliances and we will likely give much more in the future as well. Although the benefits may not be tangible at the moment, they will come eventually. So sit back, relax and stop with the hand wringingEND/

@watch4thedrop A truly great and epic thread, DROP!And yes, the thing about the money getting sent over there (or rather, the equipment WORTH that much money, and NOT stacks of cold hard cash) is what's truly misleading and gets people all riled up over nothing. It's weapons we weren't using anyway! It's not like those cluster munitions would have helped put out the fires in Maui.(Also, an another note, thank you DROP for not buying into that other person's anti-Israel BS.)
