@clive so this is REALLY hard to cover in brief, but “intensity” has a specific meaning, and to be fully accurate, it is not measured in decibels at all. There’s amplitude power, intensity, intensity level, and sound pressure level, and they all have different dimensions and—importantly—none measure loudness, a psychoacoustic concept. This is like total radiation of a source being in W, but for human vision we use lumens. In short, “+10dB SPL doubles perceived loudness”

@clive (I also have tinnitus and a penchant for lighting and sound so I spend too much time in these units)To really drive the point home, turning up by 20dB SPL quadruples perceived loudness but results in intensity changing by 100x.Ok back to reading your essay. Also I’m lazily not using units when say “loudness” because that’s a whole thing too.

@clive Some of the tech changes in live music have served to reduce by an order of magnitude the volume on stage. Put your guitars straight into the desk via digital pre-amp (assuming you even have a desk...), get rid of the wedge monitors and use buds. Look after those wiggies! I know it's not going to 11 but it's for the best.

@clive it wouldn't be rock music if it didn't cause damage and irritation. Though it think we would all prefer it not to be so personal, and so permanent.Attenuators are great in musicians earplugs, but it does require being conscious of the SPLs to make sure you choose the right ones. As my hearing has declined further, I just stick with the full-on plugs. It took some getting used to the "muffle," but I make less mistakes with loud sounds.

@fubaroque Playing less loud seems reasonable for sure!Except ...... pop and rock music is about timbre, and some of that comes from the volumeIf one wants to have acoustic drums of a particular intensity, that puts a floor on how quiet one can goThis isn't a problem in my country/bluegrass band, where most instruments are acoustic and there are no drums at all

@clive @MattMerk @sergi Durable medical equipment often has a different deductible, coverage percentage, and limit from general medical care. At the time I got mine, I had really lousy insurance, but it still covered 80% of my earplugs’ cost with no deductible and a yearly limit of $1500 or so in coverage. This pulled from the same limit buying an oxygen concentrator or a BiPAP would have, for example.

@clive @bynkii There are quite a few good ones. I particularly like White Noise+ because the interface is really smart – a grid you drag sounds on to and decide how loud/complex you’d like the loops to be. Plus it has a single IAP buyout vs a monthly charge only. I also sometimes use BFT’s white noise (mountain rains) when working as a focus aid, again to drown the tinnitus.
