@fribbledom > you get the ability to control your lights while away from home using their mobile appIs it only me who finds this funny? Why would I want to control lights away from home, to give my cats a scare? ðŸĪŠI mean, you might have cameras installed which might be not infrared and in this case you might want to control lights too, but it seems to me to be a very narrow corner case.

@m0xee @fribbledom You've never accidentally left the lights on and gone on holiday? You don't have children who seem to think lights are free? You don't work awkward shift patterns? You're just lacking imagination.

@Baggypants @fribbledom Yep, probably I'm just a boring person. Who can even shut power completely off when leaving for extended periods 😅

@m0xee @fribbledom I wish you could come round and teach my children that skill! 😁

@Baggypants @fribbledom TBH I don't think my parents did me good when they taught me that skill, I wish I could worry less about insignificant things like that. But of course it has good sides too 😁

@m0xee @fribbledom when on vacation having lights turning on and off gives the impression you are home which may dissuade burglars. I have used timers in the past for this purpose.

@fribbledom well, are there any privacy respecting light bulbs that don't suck?I tried my luck with ikea's tradfri before and they were so unreliable that I was forced to buy Phillips Hue.

@mahmoudhossam The bulbs are actually fine, they're just ZigBee devices. The hub is the problem and the device you'll have to replace with another ZigBee controller.

@fribbledom yeah, the recommended one seems to be a USB dongle which I don't really like, I'll probably look for something that doesn't require a separate,always-on computer to operate.

@mahmoudhossam A Raspberry Pi with a USB dongle will do the job just fine. Everything else is just that in a (more or less) fancy plastic case.

@fribbledom @mahmoudhossam esp32 is cheaper, smaller, and just as capable of turning lights in and off.

@thatguyoverthere @fribbledom I've seen wall switches with such a mode decades ago: it just turned the lights on once in a few hours for random period of time. Neat trick, but I think they are aware of this already and if they have spotters, those probably pay more attention to actual people coming and going than lights, and if they are amateurs — it probably won't stop them anyway 😄

@m0xee @fribbledom yeah RadioShack actually sold a bunch of home automation stuff like that named x10 iirc. It won't fool people for long but if you are gone less than a week it may be good enough.

@m0xee @fribbledom It might be a good idea to turn on and off lights remotely for security reasons. If so, there is definetly no reason to pass around more than an UUID. There is no reason to collect and store data for this functionality.
