I'm thinking about Mastodon in a wide view, in the world of social media, this feels a little outsider, while at the same time it also feels like it might be the future. So, let's talk about it!What do you get out of Mastodon? Why are you here? How has it compared with your other social media experiences? What do you see for the future of Mastodon? What do you want to see?And basically anything else about it you want to say about Mastodon.LET'S TALK!

@RickiTarr :blobcatshrug2: How about getting rid of the blob.cat block so that we can talk properly about Mastodon?

@RickiTarr attention democracy. everyone together decides what information, ideas and art goes viral. cultural revolution. people must earn their greater influence be convincing us to follow them. no power given to big media or advertisers. that's what's special about decentralized social media and threatening to the power of the wealthy.

@RickiTarr > I'd basically anything else about it you want to say about MastodonMastodon serves as most people's entry point into the fediverse. But it's not the only software people use here, and neither is it the best. The back-end is a resource hog and anyone wanting to host a new server would be better to choose almost anything else;https://fediverse.party/en/miscellaneous/(1/2)

@RickiTarr > What do you want to see?Fediverse apps that are designed to facilitate and separate out different kinds of social experiences. Some people are here trying to have serious conference discussions (techies, academics, journalists), while others are trying to hang out at a virtual speakeasy (shitposters, food photographers etc). These are both legitimate uses, but at present they bleed into each other in ways that tend to confuse and annoy people.(2/2)

@strypey Interesting, so you think there should be more delineation? Like Slackstadon? I do like a Mastodon Speakeasy! For me I like serious and I like goofy so I just follow everything that interests me

@strypey @RickiTarr Following more hashtags instead of people helps with this. People have a range of interests. A hashtag is one topic.

@strypey @RickiTarr That’s an opinion and a valid one from your point of view. Permit me a question; if it isn’t the best on offer to you, why stay? I don’t have your techie understanding or knowledge, but for simple minded folk like me I love the things you appear to despise.

@strypey @RickiTarr I like the fediversity. A cute bunny rabbit now and then soothes the soul which helps carry on with post capitalism narratives, antifascism, and climate change activism.:mastodon:

@RickiTarr I came here because twitter went to shit, and people I liked were here. I immediately was reminded of how it felt a lot like the web of the late 90s and early 00s — not as polished, but clearly full of people who were enthusiastic about stuff. I like that my sense of humor resonates well here, and that I can be open about my psychological and emotional struggles without stressing if I’m gonna get harassed.

@RickiTarr All the other VC driven platforms are like a casino, they're built to make you an addict. Mastodon feels liberating for many reasons, like early days social media platforms. Not the all you can eat kind of platform but a humble new beginning if you will, a Renaissance of sorts, a rebirth. I feel Mastodon/The Fediverse now has a healthy plateau to lift off and drive conversations wo it being driven by polarising algorithms.

@redflag> if it isn’t the best on offer to you, why stay?Inertia. Plus I trust the people who run this server, and that's very important for a loudmouth like me ; ) I do have an account on a Friendica server too (@strypey@libranet.de) and as of recently on a FireFish one (@strypey@firefish.nz). I don't use the vanilla Mastodon apps though. For now I'm using FediLab on Android and Semaphore as a web app, and I recently started using Tuba on desktop a bit.@RickiTarr

@soc_i_ety> A cute bunny rabbit now and then soothes the soul which helps carry on with post capitalism narratives, antifascism, and climate change activismFair point, and any such tool would need to be optional. But...> any rightwing trolls that wander by... couldn't if there were ways to filter for some level of seriousness, even one you could toggle on and off per thread. I don't know how this would work, or if its even possible, but I know people who would use it.(1/2)@RickiTarr

@soc_i_etyA lot of the CW scolding is motivated by people wanting to come here to blow off steam, not be reminded of existential problems. They could use the same filter tool to filter out anything that isn't shiposting when they're feeling that way.Which might actually make them more asked to engage with the more serious posts, when they've got the spoons.@RickiTarr

@strypey @RickiTarr I wonder if the people that want to focus on certain things they feel are deserved of a more singular focus could not do this by setting up a devoted instance. Personally, I've enjoyed the Mastodon diversity of toots. :mastodon:

@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz @strypey@libranet.de @strypey@firefish.nz @RickiTarr I do despise those two you mention, even though I have a small presence on both. I think you’re probably right; as our social media journey matures, so do our tastes. I once thought Facebook was the bees knees.

@redflag> I once thought Facebook was the bees kneesI enjoyed the novelty of it in the late 2000s, but I got worried about the dominant position it was gaining and abandoned my account well before the KickStarter for Diaspora.@strypey@libranet.de @strypey@firefish.nz @RickiTarr
