We have now updated to Mastodon version 4.2 on Krigskunst.social. This is a big update that greatly improves the search functionality on Mastodon (for servers that have ElasticSearch enabled, which we do). However, you have to actively opt in to make your posts searchable. I think unless you have a very specific reason not to want this, you should go and check this checkbox in the settings.

@anderspuck I am hopeful that at some point ElasticSearch won't be required for this functionality. It is hard to justify the significant memory required for Java/ES on small servers like mine to run it. (about 7-8GB of additional RAM on my 16GB Debian iMac Server). Also, thank you for your #Ukraine analysis. #MastoAdmin

@chris Yes, it’s a very resource hungry feature.

@chris @anderspuck The most important thing is the availability of the opt-in search option.Once enough people have that enabled, search can be provided in other ways (I do hope the option is available also on servers without ElasticSearch)

@joosteto @anderspuck the option is definitely there for me with 4.2.0. Just not sure what I am gaining from it without ES enabled. It is a huge step forward though. I don't want to diminish that.

@chris @anderspuck Other people will be able to find your posts through search. So when search is used more widely, you may get more views.

@joosteto @chris Yes, true. You should check this box even if you don’t have ElasticSearch yourself.
